FFVI – Part 16: Charlie the Choo Choo (Sabin’s scenario)

Summary: We push forward on the train. More ghosts, plus a strange swordsman named Siegfried. At the front, we face the Phantom Train, win, and get off at the next stop. Cyan’s family boards. Urgh. Then some cliff-diving.

Aboard the Phantom Train

-I love the Oversoul sprites.

Haughty lion smoke monsters possessing skeleton wizards. News at 11.

-Weird car…

-Hah! It’s the dining car. Complete with ghostly waiters.

-SABIN WANTS TO EAT? HAVE YOU READ EVEN A SINGLE UNDERWORLD MYTH?

"Yum! Pomegranate seeds!"

-He did it. He ate. It restored HP/MP, but I’m still worried about whether ghostly snacktime means Sabin is bound to the train now.

-What’s with the “Cloud” sprite with the Flav-a-Flav necklace?

-Got an Earring. Going to go with that on Sabin to enhance Aura Cannon and Rising Phoenix.

-Next car has a treasure room. We go to open it, but a dude named Siegfried – self-proclaimed “Greatest swordsman in the world” – drops in.

-LOL SIEGFRIED. Boss time.

-LOLOL HE’S AWFUL. He unleashes a flurry of attacks for awful damage. Is he wielding Excalipoor? We punch him and win.

-Dang. He stole the treasure and ran.

-Fought an “Apparition” in a box for a Hyper-Wrist (enjoy, Cyan!) and then got Sniper Eye. This allows me to never miss, but I’m not really missing much now. Perhaps there’ll be bosses later with high Evade this’ll help with.

-Aw. Our ghost friend left before the next car. See ya, buddy. Rest in peace.

-Grrrr. I hate “Gravity,” which deals half my current HP in damage.

-Front of the train. We shut it down, and it’s BOSS TIME!

-I love the imagery of this boss fight.

We’re running in front of it, with the blue/black spooky forest background. We keep stopping to attack it or cast, and it keeps throwing wheels at us. It also has a really cool holy magic attack, which looks like heaven keeps throwing spotlights at us.

Pretty easy fight though. Aura Cannon and Fang a few round and win.

The train stops to let us off.

Platform

-We’re off!

-wait

-no

-you’re kidding

-Ok, the game saw that Cyan watch his city die to poison he was helpless to fight, and thought “This guy’s got it too easy.” So they had him find that his wife and son were killed by the poison too, discovering their corpses in the bedroom. “Not enough pain, uwee-hee-hee!” laughed the game. “Let’s pile some more on.”

And so now Cyan gets to see his wife and son board the Phantom Train just after he got off. They say each say goodbye as the train pulls away, which seems nice on the surface, but really drives a dagger into Cyan’s heart.

That’s fucked-up.

The Phantom Train is a pain, and that’s the truth.

Baren Falls

-We arrive at this waterfall after a short walk.

-South of here is the Veldt, with Mobliz to the east.

-We get the option to jump off the Falls. Whatever. Let’s carry on the tradition of cliff-diving FF character. Off we go.

Sabin, building his reputation for reckless chutzpah.

-LOL COMBAT AS WE DIVE THROUGH THE WATERFALL. It’s a series of piranhas, and as we kill each pack, more pop up with no rest between. Sabin’s Rising Phoenix continues to get work done.

-Then Rhizopas, clearly a boss fish despite the lack of boss music. He casts “El Nino” LOL.

-We wash up on shore. This is getting to be a habit for poor Sabin.

-Someone who looks vaguely like Sabin (his son perhaps?) comes by.

-Another black character intro page. SO MANY PLAYABLE CHARACTERS.

Gau.

-Gau is like a friendly child poacher or something. I dunno.

-He sees us, then runs away. Shadow first, then Gau. Sabin must smell pretty rank or something.

Next time: across the Veldt.
