FFVI – Part 27: A Night at the Opera: Act II

Summary: We make our way to Ultros, and then fall inconspicuously onto the stage. The boss fight against him is on stage, worked into the opera. It’s awesome. We win, but Setzer yanks Celes onto his airship. The rest of the party grabs on and meets Setzer. Celes goes all Anton Chigurh and secures Setzer’s support.

Off Stage

-We encounter rats along the way. They’re especially annoying because they respawn mid-combat if I don’t kill them fast enough.

-And all the while the clock is ticking.

-Finally we arrive at Ultros, still pushing that ridiculous anvil…

-…AND WE FALL ONTO THE STAGE. (Sorry, Impresario!)

On Stage

-The impresario is upset that we knocked out the singers playing Draco and Ralse as they were dueling, leaving nobody to fight for Maria to continue the story. (He seems relatively chill about the fact that a murderous talking octopus was one of the things that knocked Draco and Ralse out.)

-Locke steps in! He says that neither Draco nor Ralse will marry Maria.

-HE IMPROVISES HIMSELF AS A CHARACTER IN THE OPERA.

LOCKE THE ADVENTURER WILL MARRY CELES

HE DOESN’T EVEN SAY “MARIA,” JUST “CELES”

SHIP FULL SPEED AHEAD

LOLOL THE IMPRESARIO THINKS LOCKE’S ACTING SUCKS

LOLOL ULTROS PLAYS ALONG WITH LOCKE, TAKING THE OPERA’S VILLAIN ROLE

Sorry for all the capslock, but this is glorious.

-Boss fight!

-Ultros is a tough fight. He tosses tons of conditions on us like imp, confuse, and darkness, and does heavy damage with tentacle and acid rain.

-A couple of phoenix downs and raging fists laster, we win.

Something tells me we haven’t seen the last of this guy.

-Setzer chooses this moment to drop in, grab Celes, and grappling hook out.

Yoink!

-The impresario plays this as a cliffhanger, to be followed up in some future opera: “Just as we think Maria is to become Locke’s new bride, she’s dragged off by Setzer instead! What fate lies in store for her now? Be sure to come back and see part two!”

Way to roll with it, Impresario.

Aboard The Blackjack

-Ok. Setzer’s an asshole. Got it.

-Woo hoo! Locke, Sabin, and Cyan managed to latch onto the ship, and pop out.

-Setzer doesn’t want to help when he learns that Celes isn’t Maria, but they all beg him for use of his ship.

Setzer’s Swingin’ Pleasure Boat.

-And what a cool ship it is! Basically a flying casino.

-Setzer’s no fan of the Empire, so he’s potentially persuadable. He says it’s bad for business… is he literally a wandering casino then?

-WTF

-If and only if Celes marries Setzer, he’ll help us? Wtf dude.

-CELES SAYS YES?? That’s… unexpected.

-WITH CONDITIONS. A COIN TOSS. IF SHE WINS, HE’LL HELP HER SANS MARRIAGE. IF SHE LOSES, SHE MARRIES HIM. I could honestly see this going either way.

-She flips the coin…

-Heads! She wins!

-LOLOL A TWO-HEADED COIN

Can I vote for Celes for president of the U.S., or is she not eligible because she was born in the Empire and possibly fictional?

-CELES YOU ARE THE BEST

-Setzer’s on board with us. “My life’s a chip in your pile. Ante up!”

Will I have to deal with gambling puns, metaphors, and jokes every time this guy is in my party? I’d bet on it.

Next time: Flying south with Setzer.
