FFVI – Part 54: The Kids Are All Right

Summary: Celes saves a boy from a collapsing house in Tzen with Sabin’s help, then finds Terra protecting orphans in Mobliz. It's Christmas! Just this once, everybody lives! (Except the orphans' parents. And their innocence. This is FFVI, after all.)

Overworld

-We see Kefka’s tower.

Note the lack of Vector.

That’s really, really cool. It’s probably the final dungeon, and it’s right there in front of us.

-Can’t get in. Probably for the best.

---

Tzen

-There’s a “Cult of Kefka.” Somehow, the idea of people worshipping Kefka is even more fucked up than Kefka himself. I don’t know whether I really want to meet them or really don’t want to meet them. Probably both.

-They live in a tower in the now above-water Serpent’s Trench.

-Earthquake hits?

-IT’S THE LIGHT OF JUDGMENT OH SHIT. That must terrifying to have the threat of that hovering over your daily life.

-The Light destroyed a house with a kid inside. The house is collapsing, and there are now monsters inside the house who cast paralyze. Glad I have my ribbon.

-SABIN! HI!

He’s holding up the house while Celes runs inside to save the kid.

---

Collapsing House

-Really, game? Another timer? Grr…

-Even with the Ultima Weapon and a Genji Glove, Celes is one of my weakest fighters. Her magic is okay, especially fire versus the undead monsters here.

-Ooh, got Blood Sword!

-Got the kid… ARGH! The teleport stone won’t work.

-Whew. Escaped with about 40 seconds to go.

---

Tzen

-Alrigh! We got Sabin. We also have a clearer quest now than we’ve ever had in this game: get the band back together and kill Kefka.

Climbing out of despair.

-Mobliz was burned by the Light of Judgment.

-Humbaba, one of those ancient and epic monsters, lives near Mobliz.

-Nikeah has an active port, and lies north along the Serpent Trench.

---

Overworld

-What’s up with Blood Sword? Doesn’t seem to deal any damage.

-Rising Phoenix still kicks ass.

-Tried going west to Maranda, but it broke off into another land mass.

-Let’s try east then, towards Mobliz.

-Hey, Vampire Thorns! I haven’t seen these monsters since FFII.

Team Retro.

-And the lizards now have their old FFI model. Nice touch.

---

Mobliz

-The town is wrecked.

-A kid emerges from a building briefly before scooting back inside. We follow.

-In the basement (I think this was the old mail building), we find a whole lot of kids living in hiding.

-TERRA!

-“Mama?” Aw! She’s like the den mom for all the kids here. Everyone here loves and needs her:

How can we ask her to leave them?

-Duane and Katarin are here. Their names are familiar, but I can’t quite place them.

-Terra feels she can’t fight anymore.

---

Flashback

-Terra tells us that all the adults died trying to protect their kids.

-Oh. Awesome. We get to actually see this happen. We see the Light of Judgment ripping the town apart, and the parents literally standing in front of their kids and falling into the earthquake that opens up.

-That’s right. We get to watch the kids watch their parents die. What a fun romp in the park. Thanks, FFVI.

---

Mobliz

-She’s filled the role of the kids’ parents since.

-Oh God.

-Something just hit me.

-Terra’s getting her wish. She wants to feel love for the longest time. Now she gets to feel it. IN THE WORST CIRCUMSTANCES POSSIBLE. This is like the story of the person who wished for a million dollars only to find their spouse get killed the next day and give them a million in life insurance or something.

-Wow. I guess she’s really not coming. (For now.)

---

Next time: Nikeah is probably the next stop.
