FFVI – Part 56: The Thing Under the Castle

Summary: Celes and Sabin travel through the South Figaro Cave to arrive at the dying Figaro Castle. We fight through to a tentacle monster that wrapped the castle’s engine rooms, and Edgar reveals himself as Edgar. Some wandering around Figaro Castle.

p.s. If you get the title reference, you get a thousand internet high fives.

South Figaro Cave

-SIEGFRIED? Wtf are you doing here? He tells us to stay put, that he’ll clear the cave ahead of monsters. Fuck that.

Strange monsters of the cave.

-The thieves, Gerad and Siegfried, all find the turtle and bounce on it to the room behind it. We follow suit.

-Lots of empty treasure chests here.

-DAMMIT SIEGFRIED. Caught him in the act of taking treasure, but he ran away. What is it with FF putting treasure in front of me and creating an NPC to steal it?

Figaro Castle

-Oh God. The castle’s stuck down here under the sand, and everyone’s suffocating to death.

-Onto the engine room. First time I’m able to go down there.

-Found a Royal Crown for Sabin. The stats are kind of a wash with what he was wearing, but thematically kind of cool.

-Engine room. Some tentacle beasty is messing with the engine.

-EDGAR DOESN’T HAVE AMNESIA?? Wicked, tricksy, false Edgar.

-Boss fight! Tentacle monster.

-Cool mechanics. There are four tentacles to fight, and occasionally one will grab a party member and hold them there until we break them free. For WoW plays, that aspect reminds me of Yogg encounter. Not too bad.

-Edgar needed to get to Figaro to save it, and used the escaped thieves to help him get back.

-I have to touch on Edgar’s wrap-up with the bandit crew. His cover for their trip to Figaro was that they’d raid the storeroom for treasure. He wasn’t lying about this. When the tentacle fight started, he took on the beast while sending them ahead, out of danger, to take the treasure.

Afterwards, he hid, letting them think he died in the fight. He let them get away with the treasure!

I can’t begin to tell you how much I love this. He acknowledges that they’re all decent people, and he’s happy to let them keep the treasure. It’s like what I said last time about the Empire and the Returners. Kefka puts everything into perspective. The Crimson Robbers are ok, they’re Figaro citizens, and Edgar is happy to help them.

The decency of the king: part one.

What a wonderful character. WHO HAS NO CREEPY INTEREST IN CHILDREN WHAT THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN THAT’S NOT A THING I SCRUBBED MY BRAIN WITH BLEACH

-We go into the treasure room. All the chests are empty, but the statue in the middle of the room has a nice sword for us to take, “Soul Sabre.”

-The engine’s working again. We can surface.

---

The Tentacle-Free Castle Figaro

-There’s a new tool in the store: “Debilitator.” It seems like it’ll be awesome for big boss fights, if it works on them. It assigns a single target a random elemental weakness.

The decency of the king: part two.

LA LA LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU EDGAR’S NOT CREEPY I SWEAR LA LA LA

-Several residents of the castle left to join the Cult of Kefka. A woman here suggests that they might return if a loved on pleaded with them.

Note to self: make sure to bring Edgar along when I get to that tower. Probably Edgar and Sabin, to be safe.

Kefka’s power encourages perspective.

-We learn a weird details about the Cult of Kefka. Some hardcore members spell Kefka’s name with Cs instead of Ks. “Cefca”? I’m trying to think how this could be relevant to gameplay. Maybe I’ll be asked to impersonate a fanatic and knowing this will be the key to passing. Or maybe it’s just flavor for the eccentrities of a cult? Dunno.

-Done here I think. Let’s go.

---

Overworld

-But go where? Exploring the desert I guess.

-Aha. The land mass to the west is separate. I guess I have to take the Figaro Castle Subway.

-I do so, and we travel to the westernmost continent.

---

Next time: exploring Kohlingen and the surrounding area.
