FFVII – Part 36: Keystone State of Mind

Summary: We travel the world in search of the keystone to access the Temple of the Ancients. Success – we get it from Dio at the Golden Saucer.

Overworld

-Ran through Wutai again. Couldn’t find anything obvious, so I leave the town and head south.

-Back on the plane. I explored the western continent already. Got blocked when I tried to head west of the western continent. Blocked to the south as well.

-But not blocked to the north. I was able to fly north of Rocket Town and land on a beach in an icy area.

---

Bone Town

-FUCKING

-JACKPOT

-This guy here heard Sephiroth come by looking for the Temple of Ancients. “It’s way down south. It’s on the other side of this town and the inland sea. It’s the pyramid rising out of the forest.”

-To get in, I need a keystone. “Some rich guy has it.” It’s something to go on at least.

(-God, it is SO SATISFYING to progress after last session. So, so satisfying.)

-They’re excavating something here, but can’t go much deeper.

---

Overworld

-I now know that I have to go south of Bone Town, but I explore the forest north of it. Nothing doing. Mountains block me.

-Landed south of the inlet. Saw Midgar, and remembered that I need to go MUCH farther south. So I swing around the entire continent to a southern landmass.

The squirrel from hell returns from FFV.

-Wandering and more wandering, but eventually I land on the right beach.

---

Temple of the Ancients

-I enter here and fully acknowledge I may be locked out without the keystone, but I’m hoping someone with the keystone (cough Rufus cough) will be here already.

-I get to the altar or whatever, but no luck.

Need the keystone.

-So. Who can I go to for help? Who’s rich? Rufus, but no chance he’d help. Casino guy might help. The Wutai guy, Lord Godo, may also help.

---

Weapon Seller’s House

-While I sail around the continent heading to the Golden Nugget (or whatever the casino’s name is, can’t remember), I see a lone house I’ve never been to.

-Again, jackpot! …Well, jackpot-ish. The guy in this shack heard of the keystone, and even had it, but sold it.

-I was half-right. He sold it to Dio, the owner of the Golden Saucer.

-I ask this guy about the temple, and he heard the “Ultimate Destruction Magic” was supposed to be kept within it. Ultima I’m guessing. This is starting to feel ominously like the end of FFVI’s World of Balance.

---

North Corel

-More wandering because I have no real memory of where the Golden Saucer is. Ended up at North Corel.

-One of the townsfolk said that the Turks showed up, offering 100,000 gil for a Keystone.

Those wacky Turks.

-We hop on the Ropeline and we’re Saucer-bound.

---

The Golden Saucer

-I seem to remember Dio being in the Battle Arena. Saucer-goers here tell me I’m right, that his museum is around here.

-Sure enough, the Keystone is here.

-Oh God. Speedo-Dio is here, and he’ll lend me the Keystone if I ‘entertain him.’ Um.

-Phew. Just have to fight in the battle arena. Cloud is kind of low health, I haven’t saved in a while, and I don’t know what’s coming. So I win one fight and bow out. Dio’s disappointed (and I get the sense that if I had pushed further I would’ve gotten more rewards), but he gives me the keystone.

-Hm. That was easy. There’s no WAY that Shinra or Sephiroth will swoop in and take the keystone from me. Simply no way! Never gonna happen!

-We try to leave the Saucer, but the Tram isn’t working. Cait Sith goes to book us a room at the hotel.

---

Next time: I predict a quiet, uneventful stay at the hotel where nothing could possibly go wrong.
