FFVII Crisis Core – Part 12: Stoned

[Quick note: I'll be on vacation from Wednesday through Sunday, so probably just a couple of posts this week today and Tuesday.]

Summary: Zack heads back to explore the Shinra building briefly, and completes a series of missions for Mako stat boost stones.

Shinra Building

-Done with Sector 8 for now, so back to the Shinra Building.

-The info desk apparently helped some guy find his kid who got lost in the building.

-Hey, we got a name! The protag’s full name is Zack Fair.

-The Exhibit Room has all sorts of models of Shinra’s creation. Some a bit familiar – like the car we used to escape in FFVII and the rocket.

Weird – like seeing the Tower of Pisa pre-tilt.

-The Training Room on the SOLDIER floor just has some scientists and some dudes doing squats.

-There’s also a Materia Room, but not much going on. Some scientists.

-Hey, talking to people opened up more missions!

---

Mission: Zack, the Materia Hunter > Mako Stones > SPR Mako Stone

-Set in the slums of Sector 6.

-Short mission. Just some belly guys and flying eyeballs.

---

Mission: Zack, the Materia Hunter > Mako Stones > VIT Mako Stone

-Island. Spriggans to fight.

-Boss is a pack of three “Grashtikes.” Still quick-n-easy.

-The rewards are just some stones used for Materia fusion to boost other materia. Can’t use yet.

---

Mission: Zack, the Materia Hunter > Mako Stones > MAG Mako Stone

-To Mt. Corel for this.

-Another short map. Grashtikes and one of the thunder pelican things.

---

Mission: Zack, the Materia Hunter > Mako Stones > HP Mako Stone

-New setting here: plains. Much more wide open than anything prior in this game.

-Holy CRAP. Therer are SO MANY ENCOUNTERS.

Seriously. WTF, game. I take like two steps and fight more bugs or birds.

-Boss is a pair of “Bat Eyes,” green, spiky, flying eyeballs. They try to cast silence on me, but my sword silences them.

---

Mission: Zack, the Materia Hunter > Mako Stones > ATK Mako Stone

-Desert. The monsters here are Bombs and Mandragora. The Mandragora are little carrot things with a sprig of spiky leaves for hair, and they turn those leaves into a shredder for an attack.

-Succeeded on my monster DMW screen for the first time! Well, sort of. It rolled a silhouette I haven’t yet unlocked rather than Tonberry or Ifrit, so just did a normal Chain Slash rather than summoning anything particularly new.

Maybe a robot of some kind?

-Ew. The boss is a swarm of… something. “Slaps.” Not especially tough, but it’s unique so far in that my physical attacks did only minimal damage. Had to use Blizzard.

---

Mission: Zack, the Materia Hunter > Mako Stones > LCK Mako Stone

-Final mission in the campaign. This one in a cave, and listed as “Very Hard.”

-Immediately a new monster, a crabby-type guy.

“Death Claw.”

-Gotta make sure to dodge his attacks.

-Now THAT’S what I’m talking about! Got an “Esuna” materia from a chest.

-Boss was the swarm monster and two death claws. Died. Tried using potion but it didn’t seem to go off? Ok.

-Got back there with adjusted materia. Kept my distance and used Fira to blow them away from afar.

-Campaign complete!

---

Next time: I actually, finally, for realsies, at last end Tseng’s waiting and go with him to Genesis’ village.
