Chrono Trigger – Part 18: Summoning Circle

Summary: Took on Magus, but didn’t stop whatever ritual he was working on (most likely summoning Lavos). Brief stop in some weird time where Marle and Crono are together, then back to 65,000,000 BC.

Magus’s Castle

-Going down a long flight of stairs away from Ozzie’s room at the top. The music is subtle, quiet, eerie, and doesn’t even break into combat music when we fight some bats.

-wait, I know the sound. It’s the same sound as we heard in the town square of Medina Village, with the chanting villagers around the Sir Magus statue.

-We’re now in a black room. As we walk forward, blue fires ignite on our sides.

Chanting. The same chanting.

A voice: “Now the chosen time has come. Exchange this world for…”

ah shit it’s world of ruin time isn’t it

-We approach and see Magus in a sacrificial circle. He recognizes Frog.

-WAIT WHAT THE SWEET HELL IS THAT THING HE’S PRAYING TO??

-Magus notices the Masamune, but seems unphased. He’s still doing his thing, his ritual. “The black wind begins to blow…” Summoning Lavos I assume.

-Every time we hit him, we change his magic vulnerability. Gotta cycle past Shadow and Fire to Water or Ice or Lightning. Can’t hit him with a non-vulnerable magic or it heals him. Fight very carefully, slowly, methodically.

-He breaks his own barrier when he “risks casting a spell,” a heavy AoE damage called Dark Matter, but during the cast I can slam him with X-Strikes and anything else. After Dark Matter, I heal up with Frog’s Heal and the dual tech Aura Whirl.

-VICTORY! Whew.

-Ruh roh. The image of the demon that he was praying to starts to waver. “Bad timing… don’t wake up on me now!” This is MAGUS saying that. That’s bad.

-Magus didn’t create Lavos. He just tried to wake him up. Lavos slept within the earth anyway, drawing its energy.

-A Gate opens, and reality begins to fade.

All of us, Magus included, spin and fall inside. Does that mean that we’re heading to End of Time since there are four of us?

???

-Black screen. A voice: “Crono…”

-A clock chiming.

-UHHHHHH WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING

-WE’RE IN CRONO’S ROOM AND MARLE IS TELLING HIM “HONEY, WAKE UP, YOU’LL BE LATE FOR WORK” AND ARE THEY MARRIED?

-I mean… lololol what??? It could be a dream or a fantasy if Crono’s into her, but this would seem a weird direction for a fantasy to take.

Pre-History

-The scene shifts to everyone, frog included, waking up in Ayla’s tent.

-Ayla found us in Mystic Mountain, unconscious, and brought us back to the village. Magus was nowhere to be found. He got scattered somewhere else in time.

-Ok, this feels VERY similar right now to the midpoint of FFV. When we just fought Exdeath in his castle, won the fight, but he completed his ritual anyway and we woke up in a different area with things seeming wrapped up.

Very similar feel. Which means shit’s about to go down.

-hahahahaha Ayla’s reaction to Frog I’m crying

Poor Glen. Poor, delicious Glenn.

-Ayla leaves. We rest.

-Kino walks in the next morning, saying that Ayla went to Laruba Village to fight Reptites. The woods are on fire.

-New stuff is available at the trading post!

-Swapping out my party members for a change of pace, to bring back Robo and Lucca.

-Farmed up a bit with a quick Nu stop, and traded for an Aeon Blade, Magma Hand, and Dream Gun for my party.

-Learned some things around the village. The Reptites followed Ayla. A red star now hangs in the sky, even during the day. (Lavos? Current theory is that Lavos is a Jenova-esque alien that embedded itself in the earth in pre-historical times. I.e. now.)

-Something’s going on in the lava to the east.

I wonder if it’s Magus-related. It occurs to me that he may have been ported to the same point in time as us, but a different location perhaps. A Magus-Azala alliance doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility.

-Dactyls go anywhere. Probably will have to go to the Dactyl Nest to find one and fly east then.

Next time: into the Laruba Ruins after Ayla.
