Chrono Trigger – Part 31: Conversations with Dead People

Summary: Difficult times for Marle at Castle Guardia. Goodbye to Toma. Repairing the Northern Ruins, and Frog helps the ghost of Cyrus find peace. Perhaps even a bit of peace for himself.

Around 1,000 AD

-I want to check out Medina Village, and then hunt around a bit for the Rainbow Shell or Toma’s grave.

-lolol. Medina square has no statue anymore. No ominous chanting, no Ozzie, no Magus. Just some imps out enjoying the weather amidst pleasant music.

-In this timeline, the humans and Mystics are at peace. They’re even building a ferry between Truce and Medina!

-A friendly imp leads Medina Village, and Ozzie VIII is his servant. This is the brightest timeline. This is beautiful.

-It’s difficult to describe how flat-out strange this feels.

---

Castle Guardia

-Returned to Castle Guardia, and we’re not treated as terrorists now that Marle is in group. She and the Chancellor have a conversation about Marle’s mother’s death, Queen Aliza. I clicked through the story a little quickly and didn’t pick it all up though. Really was just expecting him to scream “TERRORIST!” and chase us out. Then I remembered: no Crono.

-The chancellor tells a story about how the King’s indifference may have contributed to Aliza’s death. (Not that I necessarily trust the Chancellor farther than I can throw him.) It’s understandably shocking to Marle.

-Crono is on probation.

-The lawyer, Pierre, says that the king now believes that Marle’s disappearance was not the result of a kidnapping.

-A soldier says that the jailers hired by the Chancellor gave him cold stares. “It’s like they weren’t even human!” Looks like my mistrust in the Chancellor is well-placed. Based on the trends that the game has given, I’m going to guess that the Chancellor is one of Yakra’s descendants.

-Someone says that the old Chef had a cook-off with Magus’s troops. This new and more peaceful history is so weird.

-We approach the throne. The King chews out Marle for bringing her friends into the castle. Hard for me to tell whether this is the King’s honest beliefs or that Wormtongue of a Chancellor’s poisoned voice, but it hurts Marle in either case.

AND SHE BRINGS OUT THE BIG GUNS, TELLING THE KING THAT HIS INDIFFERENCE KILLED THE QUEEN

-And the King disowns her in a rage. This is hard to watch. Poor Marle.

-Explored the rest of the castle and got some treasure, but done here for now.

---

West Cape

-On the northwestern tip of the southeastern continent, found a grave. Toma’s grave.

-Poured out some of Toma’s pop on it, as he requested.

-His ghost appears!

Tell us where the Rainbow Shell is, Mr. Ghost.

-He does. It’s on the Giant’s Claw, an island northwest of here.

-RIP, Toma Levine. (Hurray, a Jewish adventurer!)

---

Choras

-One of the men here is a carpenter. I’ll bet I can get tools from him and bring them back to 600 AD. Perhaps I can even get one of the carpenters to repair the floors in the Northern Ruins, allowing me to explore.

-Success. He lends us his tools.

-A Ghost Knight is said to wander the Northern Ruins.

-I’m confused. I flew northwest, and didn’t see the Giant’s Claw. Hm.

---

Northern Ruins

-The big ghostly knight appears immediately.

-CYRUS???

-None of my attacks do anything. Maybe I need Marle in the group for Ice spells.

-Robo says straight out that Cyrus is resisting attacks.

-Then he notices. Cyrus sees that it’s Glenn, and Glenn sees that it’s Cyrus. Cyrus seems to be fighting something internally, but still raging out. The fight ends. Hm.

-He’s stuck in some kind of loop that we can’t break. Not in this time period, at least.

---

600 AD

-Found the Giant’s Claw. First gonna stop in Choras though.

-Gave the tools to the carpenter and he goes off to work.

-Checked out the Northern Ruins. Nothing changed there. Maybe I’ll try again in 1,000 AD?

-Nope. Went back to 1,000 AD’s Northern Ruins, and no changes.

-Aha! Jackpot. Back in 600 AD, I had to go to the Carpenter’s house, then he and his crew went to the Northern Ruins and repaired it.

---

600 AD – Northern Ruins

-They repaired most of the spots, except “where monsters hide.” Once we clear those spots and talk to the crew again, they’ll come back to finish the job.

-Holy crap. Just tried Beast Toss on some skeletons. Ayla runs up to the monster, picks it up, and plays catch with Robo, using the monster as the ball. After a few tosses, Ayla bodyslams the monster and does even more damage than Cube Toss.

-Cleared some skeletons out and back to the carpenter. Paid him 2,000G to continue his work.

-I’d been going into the east tower. This time, they cleared the door in the west basement.

-Cyrus’s gravestone is here.

Nothing happened, but I swapped in Frog and now get a scene.

-Cyrus’s ghost appears. Glenn feels guilt for not doing more, but Cyrus absolves him. Acknowledges how far Glenn has come. How capable, how skilled, how nobles Glenn is.

Cyrus’s true heir. This is lovely.

-The ghost fades. His final words: “Look after Queen Leene.”

-?

-The Masamune floats into the air of its own accord as Frog’s theme triumphantly breaks in. It splits into Masa and Mune.

-They’re a delight. They acknowledge the beauty of that scene in their own special way, and agree on something.

-WOOHOO!! Souped-up Masamune.

Full power, and Frog is ready to rip.

-Went back to the carpenters. 2,000 more gold. The Northern Ruins has a new name: “Hero’s Grave.”

- Got some Nova Armor, which protects status. Badass.

-Tougher monsters further inside, especially a Base (slime-type). Not sure what it’s weak against. Maybe fire, and Lucca’s not in my group.

-Beat them. Got a Siren and a Kali Blade. Dunno who the Kali Blade is for.

-Quest complete. Nice. One last thing to do.

---

1,000 AD

-Couldn’t return the tools to the carpenter. I guess we’ll keep them.

-The Northern Ru—sorry, Hero’s Grave. Visited the grave itself.

The epitaph changed.

You done good, Glenn.

-I erred. All the treasure in 1,000 AD is gone. I should’ve repaired the ruins without taking the treasure, then traveled to the future, took the treasure, and traveled back to 600 AD and took it again for double treasure. Oh well.

---

Next time: Giant’s Claw.
