Chrono Trigger – Part 15: Lizard and Ape

Summary: Into the lair of the Reptites. Goodbye (for now – please, just for now!) to Ayla. Reforging Masamune.

Forest Maze

-Kino’s here. …did she help the Reptite? Out of jealousy maybe? :P

-WAIT IT REALLY WAS OUT OF JEALOUSY??????????? IS THIS REAL LIFE??????????????????? Not just queer subtext, but flat-out text!

-Well, jealousy of some sort. She was sad that Ayla liked Crono better than her.

-The best part of this may be that this ends well.

Kino made a mistake, letting her emotions override morality and judgment; she apologizes honestly, and Ayla forgives her. And that’s that! Kino doesn’t become some evil rage villain because she can’t have Ayla to herself only. This is already beyond wonderful.

-Unfortunately, what Kino stole from Crono the Reptites stole from Kino. Into the maze.

-Oh. Kino’s a dude. Well. That’s… less interesting. Still nice resolution anyway. I swear, I’m SO BAD at telling characters’ genders in this series.

-Kino goes back to protect the village while we press on. Kino’s next in line for Chief.

-The maze itself is pretty confusing. Lots of overlapping terrain.

But I don’t mind. Why? Because NO RANDOM ENCOUNTERS!! *happy dances* I can wander and explore and get the layout of the place and enjoy it because I’m not stopped every three seconds to fight.

-Winged Ape monsters are nasty here. The wonderful “Drill Kick” dual tech does heavy damage to them though.

Crono spins his blade around, catches a spinning Ayla, and flings her above the enemy where she drops down with the drill kick.

-Got all the treasure I could find – all potions and similar items rather than armor – and made it through.

Reptite Lair

-The cave ringed inside the maze.

-No Reptites yet. Evilweevils (big rhino bugs) and a Megasaur.

-Shocking the Megasaur with lightning reduces its defense. Good to know.

-Hee! Ayla gets “Cat Attack.” It’s as amazing as it sounds.

-Speaking of badass techs, Ayla and Crono got a dual tech called “Volt Bite.” Crono zaps Ayla with lightning, charging her up. She then pounces at the enemy and bites and claws at it with her zappy teeth. SO FUCKING COOL

-Save point. Boss coming. (Btw, really glad they put save points before bosses.)

-Reptite Queen Azala. I keep wanting to write Azula, but wrong fictional universe.

There’s a whole lizard vs. ape thing that reminds me strongly of the Mario Brothers movie. Ayla is John Leguizamo and Azala is Dennis Hopper. (Except this is fun and that was awful lol.)

-She wants us to tell her about the Gate Key. Uh. How about no?

-Azala summons Nizbel. Boss fight.

Nizbel is a ripped af triceratops creature.

-Yay! The Megasaur technique works on Nizbel. Crono’s lightning keeps Nizbel stunned/shocked while the Ayla and Marle whale away with Cat Attack and Ice respectively.

-Nizbel’s main quirk is that every once in a while he releases the electricity we zapped him with for big group damage, but we just zap him again and heal up with Aura Whirl.

Victory!

Rule #1 of surviving pre-history: DO NOT FUCK WITH CHIEF AYLA.

-Queen Azala gives back the Gate Key before fleeing. Her parting words: “Your days are numbered!”

Just a standard villain line. The problem is that we KNOW our days are numbered. And we KNOW our days are numbered specifically due to Lavos, a large, turtle/lizardy looking thing. Perhaps this encounter down here inspires an alliance somewhere down the line between Sir Magus and the Reptites.

Around Pre-History

-We’re back at the Chief’s Hut.

-WHAT??? Boooo! Ayla’s staying behind now while we continue. We say goodbye to her and Kino, promising to return. I was really hoping to bring her to End Time to meet Robo

-Traveled to the Dactyl Nest. Some really tough monsters here to the point where I wonder if I’m supposed to be here. Probably not yet, but whatever. I survive so far.

-Reached the top of the Nest. Nothing up here. Will likely be back later.

-Someone at the Trading Post told me there was an item I missed: Ruby Vest. Farmed up the materials to buy a few at the Hunting Grounds and took another shot at Nu for 30 more tech points.

-Time to leave this place for now.

Melchior’s Hut – 1,000 AD

-Repair montage time as Melchior and Lucca work to fix the sword.

-Still not sure how it’s possible that Melchior’s name was on the blade already. My guess at this point is that it’s something timey-wimey – like, that Melchior puts his name on the blade now and it gets broken at some point and dropped into the past and Melchior gets memory loss.

-Other bad theory: Melchior may even be the hermit we saw in the future! I don’t know how that’d be possible, but… *waves hands* timey wimey!

-Success. The Masamune is reforged.

---

Next time: returning the sword to our favorite self-doubting amphibian.
