FFXIV – Part 114: Tsuyu

Summary: Beginning the patch 4.3 main story quest. Yotsuyu’s new identity falters thanks to Asahi, the worst human alive.

---

Gosetsu and Tsuyu

-Lord Hien has checking the Red Kojin, his part of the deal with the Garleans. Ensuring they don’t hoard enough to summon another primal. The prisoner exchange will happen soon.

-Yotsuyu has tended closely to the convalescing Gosetsu. Feeding him, bathing him even.

-We see her washing his back, concerned about the scars there. Scars she gave him and no longer remembers.

-A sudden flash of memory, back to the moment she shot him.

She’s gonna recover her memory at the worst possible time, isn’t she?

What’s so cool about this is that while I’m sure she’ll recover her memories, I have NO IDEA how she’ll react. Will she retain her current sense of self and be overwhelmed with regret? Or will she double down and return to the Empire?

-We head out to meet with Garlemald, to prove that Yotsuyu lost her memory and should be allowed to stay in Doma. Not that it matters – I’m sure her brother Asahi will sabotage this no matter what.

-OH SHIT YOTSUYU FLED! She’s missing, and crossed the river in disguise.

---

Gone Like the Morning Dew

-The trail leads to Namai. This is bad. The villagers will recognize her.

-omg she hasn’t recovered her memories, she just came her to get a persimmon for Gosetsu!

-The villagers see her and FREAK TF OUT. Rightfully, given what she’s done. Plus, they think she died and so assume she’s a vengeful ghost.

-She’s confused… and gets another flash of memory, of her torturing this village.

-Hien rushes to explain, but it doesn’t help. The villagers believe she’s faking, or if not that it doesn’t matter. They want her to pay for her crimes, memories or not.

YOTSUYU: “What I saw, then… It’s all true. I’m sorry! I’m so, so sorry.” Only bits and pieces, but she’s starting to understand that the flashes she’s seen are real memories. She collapses, begs forgiveness.

-One of the main boys who in the village who lost her family, Isse, is enraged. She destroyed their lives and she’s ‘sorry?’

-Isse’s sister Azami reacts differently. She walks up to Yotsuyu and hands her a persimmon. “Can’t you see how scared she is? How can you be scared of her? She’s not the same.”

-Hien lays it down. She’s now “Tsuyu,” to be treated as a citizen of Doma until her memories return.

-This is just putting things off. Her memories have already started coming back, and they won’t stop now. The villagers will leave her alone for now.

---

Fruits of Her Labor

-Time to meet the empire. Asahi claims that they have the Doman prisoners in an airship above. Suuuure.

-Hien brings Tsuyu to the meeting, to prove her memory has not returned.

ASAHI: “In anticipation of this tragic turn of events, I took the liberty of inviting some special guests…”

-An older couple appears. Tsuyu staggers back with memory… these are her abusive foster parents.

ASAHI: “Is something wrong, dear sister? These are our beloved parents. Does not the sight of them bring back sweet childhood memories?” FUCK OFF FOREVVVVVVER

-Her memories still haven’t returned in any coherent way. Asahi walks up to Tsuyu, whispers in her ear: “Do not grow too fond of this place, dear sister. You will come back to us ere long.”

-I admire Hien. He’s maintains his composure, suppresses his rage. The prisoner exchange will go on.

-We return to the Doman Enclave in the meanwhile. Tsuyu returned to Gosetsu, eyes red from weeping.

-Alphinaud brings up a detail from the meeting that concerns him. The imperials had crates with them. Ruh-oh. Explosives for an attack? Hard to say, since he’s had other chances to take out Hien.

I almost wish they were explosives. I’d be less nervous.

-A maid interrupts. Tsuyu is again missing.

-I run out to search and find Asahi’s father dying on the ground. Echo, flashback time.

-We see Tsuyu fleeing the Enclave. “If only I hadn’t remembered.” She DOES have her memories!

-She withdraws a dagger from her sleeve. Brings it to her own throat.

“He should hate me. I will not suffer his kindness. Not after what I did to him.” She’s fully remembers now what she did to Gosetsu. His treatment of her is salt in the wound.

-She’s about to kill herself when Asahi’s parents approach. They continue to be the worst.

ASAHI’S MOTHER: “You couldn’t even do us the simple courtesy of dying, could you! Oh no, you had to live and taint us with the shame of your failure!”

-They live in privilege in the Imperial capital, and blame Yotsuyu for being dragged out here to Doma.

ASAHI’S FATHER: “You’ve kept your looks at least. I suspect you’d fetch a handsome price with the right buyer. Maybe enough to get us to Kugane and start a new business.” STOPPPPPP JESUS

-Yotsuyu starts to… laughs? “No sooner do I wake from gentle slumber than the world returns in all its cruelty. Yes, this is how it always was. How it was meant to be.

“Very well. If I cannot escape my nature, then I shall embrace it.” She walks forward, knife drawn.

“To the very depths I have sunk, my soul steeped in spite and rotten to the core. The self-righteous hide behind ‘justice,’ but I need no such mask.”

-Yotsuyu grew up in pain and humiliation. She had a brief moment of innocence, and she interprets her foster parents’ reappearance as the world’s true nature crashing back in.

“The time has come to savor my vengeance against Doma. Against all my enemies.”

oh shit oh shit oh shit she runs to her parents and GUTS THEM BOTH

-Asahi steps out of the shadows, clapping. His plan to get Yotsuyu back succeeded.

-Flashback over. In the present, Asahi’s father flails then flops dead. No great loss.

-Hien’s gonna be racked with guilt for a long time, especially if Yotsuyu harms Doma now, as I expect.

---

Conscripts and Contingencies

-On the bright side, this fits with the agreement with the Empire. We were to return Yotsuyu if her memory returned as part of the prisoner exchange.

-But Hien’s not so forgiving of how Asahi went about getting Yotsuyu back. Hien wants to start building a military for whatever Asahi is planning with those crates.

-The prisoner exchange is set for Castrum Fluminis. We head to the Confederacy for back-up.

-They’re in an interesting position. Lots of their conscripts are Doman refugees. If those refugees’ families are given to Doma in the exchange, some may wish to return to Doma.

---

The Primary Agreement

-The meeting begins in Castrum Fluminis. Tense mood.

-Yotsuyu emerges on the imperial side, in her old dress. She wants back her title as viceroy of Doma.

-She raises the silver disk Asahi gave her: “This land shall know no dawn. I will spew forth darkness and drown all in eternal night. And high above you I shall shine uncaring, cold and distant as the moon!”

-The crates open. They’re full of crystals. She’s summoning a primal??

-IS SHE TRANSFORMING INTO A PRIMAL???

-The camera pans to the full moon outside. It eclipses totally; she becomes some sort of moon primal.

-Asahi laughs, his plan coming to fruition. He claims this is Doma breaching the agreement, that a Doman citizen has now summoned an eikon.

I don’t quite understand this. It’s not like there’s some third party that was going to throw its support behind whichever nation technically adhered to the terms of the agreement. The Empire could’ve just attacked if it wanted Doma back.

Hm. I’m missing something.

-The Empire withdraws. Hien, too.

-God, her design is so cool! She’s half black, half white. She even a version of Yotsuyu’s pipe.

“I am become Tsukuyomi, goddess of the moon and divinity of night.” This must be based on a real myth.
