FFXI – Part 64: Calm Before the Storm

Summary: Final preparations before we move on Al’Taieu.

Mission: Chains and Bonds (Chains of Promathia, ch.7)

-I landed near the Tavnazian Safehold after the airship battle. This is where I started the expansion, when the Tarutaru trio found me unconscious and stole my amulet.

-lololol I find the Tarutaru trio unconscious on the ground and have the chance to steal THEIR stuff. I know I shouldn’t.

-lol fuck em. They deserve this. I steal a “Ducal Guard’s Ring” then head to the Tavnazian Safehold.

-Prishe greets me: “Where the hell have you been?” …uhhh. France?

-When Tenzen unleashed the power of Phoenix, it protected us from Bahamut’s megaflare and drove back Bahamut temporarily. “This should keep his dragon-ness quiet for a while.”

-Prishe is a bit disappointed still at the revelation that she’s not the Keeper of the Apocalypse. She really was hoping for the noble sacrifice route, but will now look for another way.

BTW I’M SO FUCKING HAPPY THEY’RE NOT GOING WITH PRISHE DOING A NOBLE SACRIFICE A LA LION

-She’s incredibly sweet. “I want you to keep on fighting. Keep on living. I kinda like having you around.”

-Next stop: Al’Taieu!

“There’s another Keeper of the Apocalypse that needs a taste of Knuckle Sandwich a la Prishe!”

-I meet Shikaree Z and Jabbos at Sealion’s Den beneath the Safehold. Shikaree Z wants to harness to the sleeping gods’ power and approach Bahamut on equal footing.

-Ulmia is safe and sound in Prishe’s room. She’s sad that Phoenix may have given her life for us just now. The other Terrestrial Avatars were distant, except for Phoenix.

-Tenzen may have hit hardest of all by Phoenix’s sacrifice. He left the Safehold. I hope he’s okay.

-Sir Louverance worries that Bahamut will take vengeance upon the residents of the Safehold soon. Yeah, they should probably evacuate asap.

-He also is worried about Tenzen. The Phoenix Blade is a treasure in Tenzen’s empire and Tenzen feels responsible for its loss.

---

Mission: Flames in the Darkness (Chains of Promathia, ch.7)

-I head to the Misaraux Coast where Tenzen broods atop a cliff.

TENZEN: “So the Emptiness has now devoured Hakutei River…”
???: “With the waters gone, bandit tribes have little trouble staging raids across the borders. Our empire’s defenses are crumbling.”

This mystery person talking with him must be the female ninja who keeps popping in briefly.

-She wants him to return and help them fight against the bandits who are attacking the empire.

“You need only conquer the barbarians that mass against us, and reignite the Phoenix Blade upon their flesh.”

I like Phoenix but she’s mechanically sketchy af.

And if that doesn’t work, they’ll invade Jeuno to try stopping the Emptiness. They now know that Jeuno’s meddling is the source of the Emptiness.

-But not yet. Phoenix used her dying breaths to plead with Tenzen to secure the mothercrystals. He’ll then return to his empire afterwards.

-The woman disappears to report back to her emperor on Tenzen’s plan. Phew. I was afraid briefly that Tenzen’s despair would turn HIM into the Keeper of the Apocalypse or some damn thing.

-I return to the Sealion’s Den to join Prishe, Tenzen, Ulmia, Jabbos, and Shikaree Z on the airship, but I’m too late. They left without me. I’ll meet them in Bastok.

-Captain Wolfgang meets me in the Jeuno palace. Esha’ntarl is back in town, and will hold a planning meeting shortly in Upper Jeuno.

-Esha’ntarl meets here with everyone, all the main players in this expansion. The game text now refers to her as Mildaurion. Odd, given that her original name was Esha’ntarl.

-Mildaurion plans to CAPTURE (not kill) Bahamut to get more information. Talk about chutzpah.

-Someone has “severed the fifth crystal from the crystal line.” Either Nag’molada or Selh’teus. This means that we can’t use that conduit Selh’teus took to travel to the fifth mothercrystal in Al’Taieu. So how do we get there?

-Mildaurion plans to invade Movalpolos to travel directly to the crystal. Jabbos panics at this and runs off to warn the Moblins.

-Prishe protests this invasion as well. Mildaurion’s idea of killing off the Moblins to protect the crystal is Bahamut-levels of extreme.

-Mildaurion thankfully agrees. I like how reasonable she is. She’ll try to get the Armathrwn Society, the Zilart society that rules Jeuno, to change their plans. Prishe and I will head to Movalpolos to try reaching the crystal.

---

Mission: Fire in the Eyes of Men (Chains of Promathia, ch.7)

-I trek deep into Movalpolos, and …shit. Moblins are dead here. Jabbos is panicking.

-Jabbos sees the Tarutaru trio trembling in a prison cell, and thinks they were the ones who killed all these Moblins. He prepares to axe the shit ouf of them before Ulmia and the rest intervene.

-It was Nag’molada. He’s the one who killed the Moblins.

-Phew. The Moblins are injured, not killed. Nag’molada just wanted to slow us down. He followed Selh’teus’s path to the crystal and caused a cave-in to prevent us from following.

Jabbos is not mollified. “When I’m through with him… he’ll know… the meaning of pain!”

-How do we reach the fifth crystal with this path blocked off? Tenzen thinks Phoenix will open a pathway for us. Something from the sky rather than beneath the earth.

-And just like that, we’re off to see Cid about an airborne answer to our problems.

-I like how after all the individual storylines, everything is coming together. We’re all moving as a party now.

-Cid heard a report of a red light shooting up from the north sea – AHA! I thought that was just a dramatic Phoenix goodbye at the end of chapter 6, but that probably will guide them to the crystal.

-Cid prepares the repairs to his ship for us to take flight towards the fifth mothercrystal.

-And… that’s it? I’m stuck until I check a guide. I apparently have to wait a full in-game day and talk to Cid again. Okay.

-The next day. The repairs are going fine, but the crystal propulsion unit at the ship’s heart is broken. We need to collect stuff to help with repairs.

-Ulmia and Prishe return from their supply collection, and Prishe says I should go find the Tarutaru trio (the “Chebukkis”) on Tavnazia. They have the Eye of Altana Cid needs. Louverance is gathering wood in Carpenter’s Landing and Shikaree Z is gathering metal in Bibiki Bay. Gotta collect them.

---

Mission: Calm Before the Storm (Chains of Promathia, ch.7)

-First stop is the Misaraux Coast. The Tarutaru Trio agree to hand over the “Vessel of Light” with some persuading from Tenzen.

-Next up is the rainy Carpenter’s Landing. When I reach the point to find Louverance, an ambush of Cryptonberries attacks.

-Sir Louverance is here, but something is weird. He doesn’t seem to know me or Cid.

”Louverance” with a blue faceguard rather than his normal red.

-Suddenly, an old man, Guilloud, appears and goes all Admiral Ackbar. “Sir Louverance! IT’s a trap!” They flee and my red Louverance comes by.

“Lady Detolilla… I must apologize. It appears you have defeated the Tonberries meant for my demise.”

I’m SUPER confused, but this red Louverance is on board with helping us. I guess?

LOUVERANCE: “And there is no higher cause than saving the world from destruction… Wouldn’t you agree, Louverance Mistalle?”

…Yeah. I’m lost. Are these twins or something? It seems like Red!Louverance might have stolen Blue!Louverance’s name or title or something? Idk? What a weird plot to introduce now.

-I reach the last pick-up spot in Bibiki Bay, take out a giant octopus, and talk to Shikaree Z.

-She’s nervous. The Mithran history doesn’t even mention Promathia because apparantly he’s too terrifying. The other two Shikaree sisters arrive and offer support.

-But Shikaree Z won’t let her sisters join her!

Shikarees X and Y.

“We traveled to this continent with three distinct objectives:
1)The subduing of the wyrms that threaten the world with destruction.
2)To learn more of the sleeping gods – they who hold the power to obliterate the Emptiness.
3)To discover the location of Mildaurion – she who knows the method for waking those deities.

But I have learned on this journey : all paths lead to the Keeper of the Apocalypse. All sins can be placed at the feet of Promathia. The Twilight God. The deity responsible for thrusting the world into conflict.”

“…The sin of Promathia may have been to make us what we are. And so the act of judging that sin would be a crime unto itself.”

Shikaree Z will proceed against the Keeper of the Apocalypse, and leave the wyrms and sleeping gods to Shikarees X and Y.

Shikaree Z.

-I’m again confused, but I think the gist is that the most dangerous part is the Keeper of the Apocalypse, and Shikaree Z wants to take that on herself to protect the others.

-Shikarees X and Y leave.

SHIKAREE Z: “My rrreal name is Mhag. Remember that for when I die not as a sin hunter, but as a simple Mithran woman.”

Maybe she thinks if we kill Promathia, then sin will end, as will her role as a Sin Hunter.

-Back to Bastok to regroup with Cid.

-Ulmia and Prishe have used the repair time to compose letters to various Tavnazians. They give the letters to me to pass out if Ulmia and Prishe don’t make it out of this alive which will PISS ME OFF ROYALLY IF IT HAPPENS.

-Looks like I’m supposed to deliver those letters now.

-I deliver the bundle of letters to one of the Tavnazian guards by the port. Suddenly, a bunch of airships start circling nearby. This must be the group attacking the wyrms.

-NOPE IT’S THE C.I.D.! Bearing Prishe.

The other ships are escorts from the Jeuno armada. Time to take off.

Next time: It feels like we’re pushing toward this expansion’s endgame. Towards Al’Taieu, the celestial capital.
