Earn a Mythic Weapon in 15 Easy Steps!

I recently learned about the possibility of a mythic dragoon weapon in FFXI. "AWESOME," I thought naively! "The mythic dragoon lance, Ryunohige! Sounds super badass. Let's do it!"

So I researched how to get it.

Look. Ok.  *deep breath*




Most of y'all haven't played FFXI. It's a fun game, with many positive qualities. The story is awesome. But the process to earn a mythic weapon is something that needs to be seen in its full eldritch horror to be believed.

(Note: With a solid group, most of the items that I say only have a chance to drop can be almost guaranteed to drop. This doesn't make the process much better.)

How to Earn Ryunohige in 15 Easy Steps!

1) Kill a specific notorious monster ("NM") three times, Slendlix Spindlethumb. May spawn every 1-2 hours.

2) Kill a different NM three times, Herbage Hunter.

3) Kill a different NM three times, Kirata. May spawn every 1-8 hours.

4) Kill a different NM four times, Intulo. May spawn every 1-6 hours.

5) Kill a different NM four times, Ramponneau. May spawn between 90min - 8 hours.

6) Kill a different NM six times, Shoggoth. Finally can trigger this to spawn, so no camping out by its spawn point and hoping!

7) Kill a different NM six times, Farruca Fly. See above.

8) Kill a different NM eight times, Chesma. See above.

Now the easy part is over.

9) Collect 50 "Two-leaf Chloris Buds." Those drop from a NM called Chloris, and Chloris drops 1-2 each kill.  Here's how you have to summon Chloris in a particular Abyssea zone:

a) Kill Gulch Limules until one drops a High-Quality Limule Pincer.
b) Use the pincer to spawn Vetehinen,  and hope it drops a Tarnished Pincer. If not, repeat a.
c) Kill Gully Clionids until one drops a High-Quality Clionid Wing.
d) Use the wing to spawn Halimede, and hope it drops a Shriveled Wing. If not, repeat c.
e) Kill Beholders until one drops a Bloodshot Hecteye.
f) Use the Tarnished Pincer, Shriveled Wing, and Bloodshot Hecteye to spawn Ophanim. Kill it and hope it drops a Veinous Hecteyes Eyelid. If it doesn't, repeat steps a-f.***

g) Kill Caioneags until one drops a Baleful Skull.
h) Use the skull to spawn Cannered Noz, and hope it drops an Exorcised Skull.
i) Kill Blood Bats until one drops a Bloody Fang.
j) Use the Exorcised Skull and Bloody Fang to spawn Treble Noctules. Hope it drops a Torn Bat Wing. If not, repeat steps g-j.

k) Kill Pachypodiums until one drops Alkaline Humus.
l) Use the humus to spawn Gancanagh, and hope it drops Acidic Humus.
m) Kill Canyon Scorpions until one drops a Venomous Scorpion Stinger.
n) Use the humus and stinger to spawn Hedetet, and hope it drops a Gory Scorpion Claw. If it doesn't, repeat steps k-n.

o) Kill Chukwa, a wandering adamantoise. Hope it drops Mossy Adamantoise Shell. If it doesn't, wait for it to respawn and repeat step o.

p) Use the Veinous Hecteyes Eyelid, Torn Bat Wing, Gory Scorpion Claw, and Mossy Adamantoise Shell to spawn Chloris with a strong group - it has brutal abilities - and collect the 1-2 "Two-Leaf Chloris Buds" it drops.

q) REPEAT STEPS A-P 20-40 TIMES, UNTIL YOU HAVE FIFTY "TWO-LEAF CHLORIS BUDS."

10) Collect 50 Ulhuadshi's Fangs, shifting to a different Abyssea zone.

a) Kill Entozoons until one drops Blanched Silver.
b) Use the silver to spawn Pallid Percy. Hope it drops a Mucid Worm Segment. If not, repeat step a.
c) Kill the roaming NM, Amun. Hope it drops Shrivelled Hecteyes Stalk. If not, wait until it spawns again and try again.
d) Use the Mucid Worm Segment and Shrivelled Hecteyes Stalk to spawn Ulhuadshi. Collect the 1-2 Ulhuadshi's Fangs it drops.
e) Repeat steps a-d 20-40 times, until you have fifty Ulhuadshi's Fangs.

11)  Collect 75 Dragua's Scales, shifting to a third Abyssea zone.

a) Kill the wandering NM, Hazdiha, and hope it drops a Bloodied Dragon Ear. If not, wait until it respawns and try again.
b) Use the ear to spawn Dragua. Collect the 1-2 Dragua's Scales it drops.
c) Repeat steps a & b 40-60 times, until you have seventy-five Dragua's Scales.

12) Collect 300 chunks of beitetsu, earned from various high-end content, to upgrade.

13) Complete the Rhapsodies of Vana'diel storyline.

14) Collect 10,000 chunks of beitetsu to upgrade one last time.

15) Congratulations on your mythic Ryunohige!

I completely respect people dedicated enough to this game to do this. If FFXI is your forever game, if you're playing with a close group of friends, then I can see a certain rhythm to this process.

As for me, if it turns out that I need to go through a process similar to this for any of my upgrades in order to beat FFXI's story content, I will simply not finish the game and that will be that.
