FFTA2 – Part 10: The Auction House

Summary: My first clan auction. A bunch of side quests, which I’ll limit going forward (see ending note).

Way of the Meek (side)

-Dayvis the Meek seeks protection. He fears someone’s after him and doesn’t know why.

-I’m skeptical. We reach the battlefield. This guy has a necklace with two hearts, his job is “thief,” and an army of bandits are here. I’m betting he knows EXACTLY why these “bandits” are after him.

-This is probably my least favorite battlefield. The enemy starts on high ground, and the only way to reach them is a narrow path they easily block.

-Tried out Parley on my paladin, making the enemy flee. It’s… not great. It seems to have a higher chance of landing when the target is at low health, at which point I might as well kill them and get the loot.

-That whole fight, Dayvis kept his distance and hid. I appreciate that since it’s an escort quest, but apparently he had a slick weapon and just didn’t’ want to help because it would sully the weapon with blood.

I have zero doubt in my mind that he stole it. Poor, naïve Luso.

-He says he’s off to the Galerria Deep. No doubt we’ll see him down the line.

---

What Was Lost (side)

-Margot of House Camelot was developing a knight sword called King Arthur (of course) that bandits stole.

-A light dawns on Luso. Dayvis played you.

-For now, I just report that he said he was heading to the Galerria Deep.

---

It’s a Trap! (side)

-A trap salesman accidentally (really?) dropped several traps in the Aldanna Range. They need me to destroy them.

-The baknamy in the area think we set the traps on purpose. Hence, a fight.

-AH DAMMIT! I forgot the law. I hate when I just brainfart like that. The law was “no abilities that target everyone” and I used a tinker ability.

---

Foodstuffs: Aroma (side)

-More work with the Poison Tasters Guild. Find enough green stuff to feed two, two per serving. (So kill four green things total.)

-So there is only one thing here that’s green and “uniquely aromatic” – a malboro. But there’s only one of them.

-Learned Bad Breath as blue magic! [Non-rhetorical question: is it usually blue magic in the series? I can’t remember.]

-Oh good LORD that was a fight. More and more malboros and alraunes and tomatoes kept coming at me. I had to kill exactly four Malboros once all showed up.

That’s enough for whatever unholy food this guild wants to make.

---

Bonga Bugle – Rosefire (side)

-The Bonga Bugle wants reporters to make perfect pottery photographs. It’s up to me to place them on treestumps artistically… all while dodging wolves and faeries and shit.

-Success. Photography’s a dangerous job.

-Also got a new blue magic, “Screech.”

---

The Moon Seal (side)

-This is the continuation of a prior quest about the Stone With No Name.

-Legend tells of three seals. I’ve found the first – next up is combining the Stone With No Name with the Moon Seal.

-I keep trying the mass haste tinker spell and it keeps hitting the enemy party. I’m 0/5 so far.

-This time, I’m going to leave the guardian alive when I put the Moon Seal on the Stone With No Name.

-It doesn’t make a difference. We get teleported to a new area and the guardians are just as bloodthirsty as before.

-We clear the area and allow Mauri to explore.

-Illusionist is SO POWERFUL against the large enemy packs!

---

Our Playground (side)

-Some kids want me to kick folks out of their playground so they don’t have to do homework and read and stuff. DUTY CALLS.

-The bangaa and seeq (and assorted monsters) here are the Zedlei Consortium.

-They want to use the foul water here to farm… uh… “bomb pepper and flan fronds.” They’re making monster byproducts. Ew.

Okay, Bebop.

-Hee! The enemies are all called “Zedlei Produce.”

-We take them out and free the play area for the kids. For now.

A new villain rises!

---

Seeding the Harvest (side)

-Monsters always raid this farmer’s crops. She wants me to fend them off.

-Picked up a new blue magic: Eerie Sound Wave, a dispel from a malboro.

-I can’t get over how poorly thought-out these laws against things I can’t control (e.g. knockback) are.

I suppose it might be technically possible to only hit an enemy when someone is right behind them, negating the possibility of knockback, but come on.

-Stockpiling this blue magic now! Got War Dance from (this is their literal name) a Hoppy Bunny.

-Fuck malboros. They made this fight so much longer by blinding my whole party.

---

Now That’s a Fire! (main)

-Bombs have infested Zedlei Forest. Taking them out is pretty straight forward.

Self-destruct.

-Ah, NOW the auction house unlocks!

-Auctions are available in most large towns. I’ll start with Camoa.

-The auction season is limited. Once you become champ of an area, you hold it until the next auction season.

-Okay, I don’t get this but let’s give it a shot.

-Yay I won Camoa! I get it. Each round I have to decide how much to bet to stay juuuust ahead of the others.

-Won Targ, then also won Baptiste Hill in a tie. (“Victory goes to the most dedicated entrant.”)

LUSO: “This is fun!”
ADELLE: “Not half as fun as getting my hands on the spoils is going to be.”
LUSO: “Did you say something?”
ADELLE: “Who, me? Not a word.”

-Luso wants to find some Lavenicalia flowers. They’re supposed to make good medicine and he wants to help Cid.

-Adelle thinks she can help. I need to find her pearl moss to work with. (And wants some pearls that are nearby just while they’re there.)

-VERY INTERESTING! A pub rumor says that auction players have tells. Like, they cry out when they’re about to play a 5-coin token. Or at least some players have tells, not everyone.

Next time: I think I’m gonna change things up a bit. I plan to take much briefer notes on the more interesting side quests rather than full notes on all of them. This should focus the posts more on the main quests and especially notable side quests (including job unlocks).

The posts will be less frequent, but hopefully more coherent. Much as I love the side quests, their sheer quantity makes writing these posts feel a bit disconnected.
