FFVI – Part 77: Power of Three

Summary: We continue through this mashup of the Floating Continent and Vector that serves for Kefka’s Tower. We finish off the legendary dragons, kill the three members of the Warring Triad, and approach the end.

-Celes’ party comes to the shattered remains of the containment facility.

-Not even going to try to make sense of this map. Just push on ahead on all fronts.

-Encountered two Fiend Dragons.

They cast Southern Cross and then Heartless Angel to set us all to 1hp and a bunch of other nasty stuff. These guys feel like a boss fight.

-Strago’s party got to the tower part that drew from the Vector Imperial Palace door.

-Now I’m stuck. Gah.

-Oh shit – surprise mini boss!

Inferno is the boss, but Ketu and Ranu are the arms. Not too bad.

-Here he is. The final legendary dragon. Go, Team Terra!

Skull Dragon.

He’s undead, and we take him out in like two rounds of Firaga, Phantom Rush, and Gau’s Holy Dragon rage. Got a Muscle Belt.

Ok, what now? “The Eight-Fold Seal is broken!” Yay! The “Crusader” is unlocked, who I think is an esper. But he tells us he’ll await us at the Dragon's. Hopefully that’s farther down in the tower.

-Alright. All three parties are at the gates. Team Terra and Team Strago stand on switches and open the door for Team Celes to walk through. Nervous.

-LOL – Celes threw a four ton anvil down below to flip a switch so that Terra can join in. This switch teamwork is really cool, well-designed.

-Just noticed we actually did get the Crusader magicite. What do we have to do then further?
-And Crusader magicite grants Meteor at a rate of x10! My failure at Odin/Raiden is erased!

Teamwork.

-Team Strago pushes into the Palace itself.

-OH SHIT! It’s the Guardian. That invincible mech we could never touch. Well… that was long ago. We’re ready now.

-It’s weak to lightning and water, so we pour on the Thundaga.

Guardian: “LOADING ULTROS BATTLE PROGRAM”

you’ve got to be kidding me. LOL

Victory!

-Team Strago pushes on. And runs into one of the Triad statues. Three mini bosses, then Kefka?

First of the Triad.

-Yeah, boss time. “Demon.” AND THAT MUSIC HAHAHA THAT’S GLORIOUS

-It tosses some Flare Star and Firaga at us, but not too tough.

-Stuck again… I tried pushing on ahead with Team Strago, but my other parties can’t move on. Bleh. Heading all the way back with Strago.

-I’ll say this: when I’m lost and wandering to find my way, nothing is more frustrating than constantly getting sucked into these random battles. They’re not challenging at this point, they’re just tedious and annoying. In general I’m fine with them! It’s just when I don’t know where I’m going, they feel like a waste of time.

-aha! Finally found the way to open doors for Teams Terra and Celes.

-Next miniboss, another Triad statue.

Second of the Triad.

Fiend vs. Team Terra. It’s vulnerable to Holy. Nice.

-Soon, its aura changes… and now it reflect Holy! Shit. This is the downside of Gau lol. Ah well. Victory! (Phantom Rush OP)

-Time for Team Celes to take their turn at bat.

Third of the Triad.

-Goddess. Again, phenomenal artwork on these sprites. This is my favorite of them, since it’s more defined, less “demonic mash-up.’ We beat it quickly.

Well, “we” may be skewing the truth. Setzer basically solos her. He must’ve done 45,000 damage in two rounds. We got Excailbur! (Sorry, Gilgamesh.)

-Ok. We beat the Warring Triad. But magic is still a thing, and Celes thinks it’s because Kefka must have extracted the core of their magic. Story-wise, that helps explain why we were able to defeat gods in the first place. That plus the fact that we have so many espers behind us.

-Teams Terra and Celes are in place. Team Strago moves to the final switch.

Next time: Kefka.
