FFIV After Years – Part 49: Return of the King (The Crystals)

Summary: The next floors of the Subterrane are a mech floor, where the crystal pops out a replica of the Giant of Babil’s CPU, and then a Feymarch floor. We there find both the shackled Asura and Leviathan, and proceed to unshackle them. Rydia’s especially overjoyed at this.

B11

-A mechanical floor this time. Similar to Tower of Babil I think.

-I had kind of assumed that, like the base game’s Lunar Subterrane, this one would be 12 floors. I begin to doubt that now, since I feel so far from knowing who’s behind the crystals, who Evil Moon Girl really is, and more generally wtf is going on.

-New axe for Luca, which makes her even more badass.

-Most of the mobs here are robots of some kind, but pretty okay to deal with. The real rough stuff are the coiled dragons that cast “Lightning,” which kills half my party instantly.

-Night, rest. Golbez & Ceodore. Ceodore seems a bit freaked out by Golbez’s presence. Golbez expresses massive guilt for… well, for almost destroying the universe. Ceodore wants to know why he returned (pretty stupid question imho), and the answer is, predictably, “to help.”

CEODORE: What’s it like on the moon you call home?
GOLBEZ: Are you curious?
CEODORE: Yes. Part of my lineage is Lunarian.

True. Hm. Didn’t even think of that.

A random enemy model I like.

-Experience is starting to pile up, and my party feels like it’s coming into its own.

-Another crystal. No clue what this could be. Oh… CPU of the Giant of Babil.

-Ok, Defense Node first, then CPU, then Attack Node iirc. CPU is tough to take down, because it has Reflect and is in the Back Row with related defense bonuses. Lightning Brain Buster, the Rydia/Luca band, works like a charm.

Attempt #1: Laser Barrages come in too fast for me to deal with.

Death rays, aptly named.

Attempt #2: Spider silk makes Laser Barrage synch up perfectly with Rosa’s cast speed, so her Curagas keep up well with it. Beautiful.

-Unlike previous crystal-reborn monsters, the CPU doesn’t feel regret or sadness or pain at being brought back. Because, well, it’s a computer.

B12

-Pink/purple hue this floor!

-Similar layout to the Feymarch Cave. One of the things I love about Final Fantasy is that it’s not afraid to mix genres and settings. I like the transition from the high tech motif of B11 to the purple swap of B12.

Because why not.

-Whoa! The chestpiece Edge got from Rubicante converts fire and lightning damage to healing! That’s really useful.

-There’s Leviathan. Not in a crystal. Just chilling in a house. Rydia tries to talk to him, but he just gives us an ellipse and attacks.

-Thundaga spam from Golbez and Rydia makes short work of him, and wakes him up.

-It’s easy for me to forget that he’s not just some summon or combat ally, but is friend, father, and king to Rydia.

This is great.

-Elsewhere on B12, I see Asura. She’s in a separate house.

-Fight’s on. She retaliates hard (1k+) to every hit.

Thanks, Leviathan!

-The Eidolon king is helping out to wake Asura. This has gotta be rough for him to see.

-Aw. They call Rydia their “child.”

-VICTORY! Asura is back, and Leviathan too.

-This reunion is really well done. I’m kind of tearing up a bit.

Next time: More stuff. Not sure what kind of stuff.
