FFVII Dirge of Cerberus – Part 33: Chaos and Omega

Summary: Vincent fights inside Omega, eventually reaching some kind of combination between Omega and Weiss.

Inside Omega

-Those defense buoys are chasing him. Omega’s immunity system.

-I paused it to appreciate the rocking music.

-A brief scene inside him is on rails, shooting down buoys that try to zap me. Only goes on for 30 seconds or so.

-Vincent arrives at a blue portal. Huh.

-More buoys to shoot down, then continuing on through a portal farther down. He seems to have reached a tower thing.

The map says I have to climb up inside Omega towards its head.

-This dude has some weird biology, but of course he does. He’s an apocalyptic robot monster. Of course he has weird biology.

-Part of me is worried about my ammo. I only have 286 of these Death Penalty bullets left. What if I run out? I’m going to trust that the game will think of that, and assume I have enough to continue.

-Reached the top of the tower. Um. What now?

-lol oh right, I forgot. Chaos!Vincent can fly. He flies upward.

Outside Omega

-Vincent pops out of Omega’s… mouth? Head portal? Some damn thing. Hovers in front of its face. My giant monster loving heart is beating out of its chest.

Stare-down.

-Shot down a few more buoys, then Vincent gets into a stare down with Omega. We flash inside Vincent to his protomateria, an image which fades out to the large lifestreamy circlet atop Omega’s head. Perhaps there’s a connection between the two.

-Vincent looks at the lifestream circlet. Flies towards it.

-End of stage. That was… strange. I buy some more ammo at the end of stage screen, but can’t buy Death Penalty ammo.

A Finale Chaotic

-That’s the name of this stage or of whatever it is is about to happen. “A Finale Chaotic.”

-Vincent walks forward. He’s on a pool or some still water.

-A giant beast is below him. Wtf is going on? The beast starts to throw tethered buoy things up to the air or water or whatever he’s standing on.

-This is a boss fight. The boss name is “Crystal Feelers.”

-The eight tentacle nubs around me are unhittable. Hm.

-AHA! Every once in a while, one will open up, like a flower bud. That’s the vulnerable one. While I watch for that vulnerability, I have to run to it quickly and melee it down. One by one.

-Got em all. The Crystal Feelers are down. Will the beast itself emerge?

-what

-what the sweet fuck is that

-It’s not Omega below me. Or if it is, it’s not the robot. It’s… it looks like a hot air balloon. And at the top is Weiss. He’s not moving. He just looks like a stone slab, a Weiss frozen in carbonite at the top of the balloon.

-The next phase of this boss is called “Omega Cocoon.” This is like the world’s least fun piñata. When I break it open, I seriously doubt candy will emerge.

-Popped it. It went down quickly. The cocoon blows up.

-and… Weiss? What are you doing here? He’s walking slowly, both swords-rifles in hand.

I have to imagine that Weiss is now not “Weiss” so much as “the Avatar of Omega,” but just a guess.

-Or not. He has that Hojo-ish smile. Or maybe it’s just a smile I’m reading too much into. Weiss charges at Vincent, but Vincent blows him backwards with a blast from his Death Penalty.

-But let me back up a step. Let me talk briefly about the setting. I don’t know what’s going on. If this is a metaphor, or a pocket dimension, or a real place that they’re in right now. They’re standing on a crystalline floor, with little crystalline blocks all around them, and a bland blue background.

-This whole thing is pretty confusing, but it has style.

-LOLOL

-Ok. This is like a parody of a hyper action fight and (again) I love it:

First, Vincent’s shot knocked Weiss back across the room.

Second, we zoom in on Vincent with Weiss behind him (SUPER FAST I GUESS?) having impaled Vincent with his swords.

Third, we get a closer look at Weiss and see that NO NO, VINCENT IS ACTUALLY NOW BEHIND HIM

WTF

WHAT IS PHYSICS AND WHO CARES

I don’t know if they’re using clones or illusions, or they’re just that fast, or if they’re fighting on pure anime action logic right now. I’m opting for the latter. It’s kind of delightful how little I understand about the mechanics here.

-The fight continues. Each of them is moving at light speed. I mean this quite literally. The fight devolves into just blurs of blue and white light zapping around the room.

-They stop briefly. Weiss laughs, and a black portal erupts in the sky above them.

-A purple crystal comes down from the portal. It unfolds, transforming into Omega.

Not Godzilla-sized like the Omega standing astride Midgar, but pretty damn big.

Next time: the end.
