FFVIII – Part 51: Gone Fishin’

Summary: The Garden crashes into Fisherman’s Horizon. I explore the town.

B-Garden School

-Took a bit of hiatus from the game. Time to dive back in!

-SeeD rank is 17.

-Cid starts to make an announcement over the loudspeaker, but stops as something he sees freaks him out.

-Nice technique. Camera shifts to a fisherman chilling out, and I’m a bit panicked at what the fisherman will see.

-OH SHIT LOLOLOL – THE GARDEN’S CRASHING INTO THE FISHERMAN’S DOCKS

-Though they’re not docks exactly… it’s more like a metal construction crane.

-They “landed” at Fisherman’s Horizon. Squall has to go with Rinoa and Quistis to apologize to the mayor.

-Hey, Cid plays Triple Triad. He kicked my ass. I’m unwilling to risk my best cards when the rule is “Direct” and even a loss can result in lost cards, but let’s try a game with my best non-rares.

-DID HE JUST DROP A SEIFER… aaargh, I have no way to take it. I won the game, but it’s direct and it’s numbers are too high.

-…and he drops Fujin/Raijin.

-holy crap. Is Cid like the final boss of Triple Triad? I’m not beating him right now. Stacked with high-powered cards.

-Cid warns us not to engage in any type of armed conflict. When we get off the Garden and some security dude is there to meet us, he reiterates the warning. I have a feeling this’ll be tested.

-Huh. Security dude seems pretty chill, just happy that “nobody got hurt. We love fixing stuff anyway. Kick back and enjoy your stay.”

Fisherman’s Horizon

-What a beautiful town! There’s a bowl-shaped structure in the middle.

Caught the fisherman mid-butt scratch.

Solar panels maybe?

-Wowzers. Before, I’d gotten like 5000 gil or something like that iirc for my salary. Just now, got 13,000 gil.

-lol wtf, the security guard escorting us to the mayor is called “Familiar Face.” He wants to know if we’re going to Esthar, “that high-tech city beyond the tracks.” If a sorceress still rules the city, that seems like a bad place to visit.

-Ok, something weird is going on. The guy who meets us at the bottom of the elevator is “Familiar Face #2,” and has this whole conversation with Squall about how he’s annoyed that Squall doesn’t recognize him even though they just met. Could just be pointing to Squall’s introversion, but something else could also be in play that I’m not seeing.

-Something’s DEFINITELY going on. The very next guy we see is “Familiar Face #3.” He’s judgmental of Squall, saying that being a mercenary doesn’t sound like a good life, but whatever.

His brusqueness sparks a minor epiphany in Squall.

-New Triple Triad rules! Elemental! Sudden Death!

It’s pretty intense. Had a draw, and the board just re-rolled with new elemental affixes.

-The mayor’s house is in the middle of the solar panel thingy, but I want to explore the town a bit before visiting him.

BOATMAN: “Say, the master of Balamb Garden is NORG, right? Did he evolve already?” ??????? He claims that since NORG is a “Shumi,” he should evolve.

-Upgraded Squall’s and Zell’s weapons.

-hahaha – a fishing kid starts to show off for us and breaks the shopkeeper’s window with a wild cast. This apparently is not uncommon. XD

”Dennis the Menace: Fisherman’s Horizon.”

The kid is the apprentice to the fisherman who just evaded death-by-Garden. The music turned goofy af for this whole thing.

-FH feels like something straight out of FFVII, with its re-purposed metal aesthetic.

-Came across one of the strangest repair shops I’ve ever seen.

More discussion here of the Shumi, a nearby Shumi village.

-KITTIES!!! …wtf is wrong with me. I literally tried pressing the Triple Triad button on a cat out of habit, as if the cat would accept my challenge and throw down some cards.

Heeere, puss puss puss! Want some Triple Triad?

-This place is in seriously bad shape. I have to imagine it’s the aftermath of a war with Esthar or Galbadia.

And since the people seem pretty happy, I’ll bet it’s the Sorceress War from 23 years ago rather than something more recent.

-Explored what I can for now.

Next time: the mayor’s house.
