FFVII Dirge of Cerberus – Part 21: Empire in Ruins

Summary: Nero the Sable assaults the Shera and fights Shelke in one of my aesthetically favorite scenes in this game. Vincent fights through the rubble of the Shinra Building, pushing towards Deepground.

The Shera

-Something in the engine room is going wrong. Shelke tells Cid she’ll check it out. Cid tosses her a casual, “Thanks, I’m counting on you.” Shelke gets A LOOK in her eye, taking in the “counting on you part” again, and absolutely books it to the engine room.

-And… shit’s getting weird in here. Cait Sith’s body is on the ground, unconscious. Or offline maybe? Dunno the terminology for something like Cait Sith. There are also void zone things in parts of the walls of the engine room. I wonder if this signals that Nero the Sable’s going to pop onto the ship.

-lol like two seconds like Shelke’s all “No, it can’t be,” looks behind her and sees Nero. Good guess, Coldrun! Hurray!

I LOVE Nero’s design. The body suit, the mask, the metal Archangel-esque wings, everything.

-OH SHIT NERO SOUL-SUCKED THE CREW TO BUILD UP OMEGA’S LIFESTREAM

-OH DOUBLE SHIT SHELKE IS GOING TO BAT FOR OUR SIDE HAHAHA THIS IS SO GREAT!

-They fight briefly. Shelke tries stabbing Nero with her double weapons, but he dodges all attacks.

Too fast to see.

Nero’s wings unfurl into guns and fire at Shelke, but her shield blocks it.

They’re at an impasse.

-Nero summons a void sphere of sorts and the action shifts back to Vincent down below.

Shinra Building

-Next stage is “An Empire in Ruins.”

-It’ll be weird revisiting this place after the last couple of games.

-The game must’ve known Rosso was a tough fight. The smoking rubble outside the Shinra Building is littered with potions and supplies.

-Loving the music here!

-Yeah. Definitely weird seeing this building again. In ruins this time.

-Not going upstairs this time though. Downstairs. (…which makes sense, given that we’re after “Deepground.”)

-Shinra Building is in rough shape. Beetles and bugs along with Deepground troops.

-Empty room in front of me. Nervous about a boss jumping out at me.

-And I was literally right. A spider mech boss was on the ceiling, threw some explosives at me, and jumped down. Here we go.

-Nm. It didn’t jump down. It had a twin that popped out on the lower level. Twin-style bosses.

The Black Widows.

-Not too tough actually. First phase was the ceiling mech tossing mines onto the floor while the floor mech shot me. I dodged and returned fire. When it died, ceiling mech dropped down and I just ran around it in a circle shooting at it. Its rotation speed was slow and never caught up with me. Victory!

-Moving on through the Shinra Building. Elevator going down.

-Next floor of the Shinra Building doesn’t have a map. I have to find the Deepground entrance, and collect “top secret files” on Deepground, which seems like a bonus thing.

-Came upon a bridge. Very open area, and as soon as I opened the door got peppered with gunfire. It’s aerial troops. What the hell is this place?

-Vincent tries to call Shelke. No cell reception of course.

-Just then, an incoming call. It’s Cloud, Tifa, and Barrett. Hi y’all!

-Oh. They lost contact with Cid’s airship. That’s why he couldn’t get a hold of Shelke.

-TIFA COMES THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH! She sends Vincent a map of the Shinra Building. Woohoo!

-Elevator going down further, having to shoot probes as I go.

-There are glass walls between rooms, so the Deepground troops see me coming.

-The next section, “Shinra Building – Quarantine,” really breaks out some big guns. Those rocket-launcher toting dudes.

-Coming to the end of this part of the map. Another boss fight awaits?

That’s a big 10-4.
