Summary:
Wandering our new confines of Corel Prison, trying to find clues about a
way out and the truth about Barret and the killer of Shinra’s soldiers.
Corel Prison
-We’re now in a prison surrounded by quicksand. Awesome.
-Barret’s down here. And at his feet is a man in black. Of course it wasn’t Barret before – this must be the guy with the cape, after the Black Materia… but the guy on the ground was shot too. Barret runs.
-As I wander around a bit, I get into combat, and it’s AWESOME. I mean, combat is fine, but the animation for Cait Sith and for the… thing… he’s riding are hilarious.
I also see a zipper in the back of his mount. Is that a living thing?
-Three of the prisoners only tell lies apparently. The first two times I talk to them confirm this - “This place is heaven,” and “Man with a gun on his arm? Never seen him.” Other things they say:
-Go Southwest to meet the boss, so I guess this means I go northeast.
-Once I’m in the desert, I should stay still. So I’ll always keep moving. I hope no more of those Midgar Zoloms attacks.
-“No way you’ll ever see a mysterious Chocobo carriage.” I guess I’ll be seeing one. Like the one Tifa rode in Midgar!
-If I get I win chocobo races, I can head up an elevator in a building, but I first need the Boss’s permission to enter those races.
-HOLY SHIT! We went into a house. Barret barged in, pissed that we followed him, and then he opened fire. Not at us, at the couch. I thought he was just expressing anger futiley (like he did by firing at the Sector 5 ruins when the dome fell), but someone who was HIDING BEHIND THE COUCH DROPS DEAD.
-hahahahahaha – Aeris and Red busts in, and she busts his chops for pulling the same nonsense that Cloud tries all the time.
-Yay! Barret’s gonna tell us what’s up.
---
Barret’s Flashback – Four Years Ago
-He and Dyne are returning as Shinra attacks the village. (Oh man, it’s gonna be Dyne with the gun arm wreaking havoc, isn’t it?)
-They see the village burning, and watch an old man get gunned down right in front of them. Ugh. I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again: fuck Shinra.
-Someone named Scarlet is the Shinra commander I think, yelling at the soldiers for opening fire and missing.
-…and then they don’t miss. They shoot Dyne off a cliff. Barret grabs onto him, and then the hail of gunfire cuts through their clasped hands. Dyne falls. This must be how Barret (and probably Dyne) lost their arms.
---
Corel Prison
-Barret was feeling depressed with his replacement arm, but got surgery to strap a gun on instead. He heard someone else got the same surgery.
-Tifa thinks Dyne might join us to fight Shinra, but Barret doubts it. Hard to say if this is true or not. I mean, it’s true that Barret doubts it, but I don’t know whether it’s likely. Barret’s so wracked by guilt that I’m not sure he’s correct here.
-This is really pretty touching. Barret wants to go alone, but Cloud, Tifa, everyone really says they won’t let him. They need him.
-Time to reform the party. Combat-wise I want to test out Cait Sith more, but after that scene, it’s hard for me to toss a newbie into the mix. Barret, Tifa, and Cloud.
-We meet the boss, Mr. Coates. This is the dumping ground for the Casino, and to get back topside, we have to win a Chocobo race.
-Oh – I was wrong. He’s not “the Boss” boss, but rather a lieutenant or maybe even a “first among prisoners” type dude. We still need the boss’s permission.
-Save point.

Next time: we go meet the “boss.”
