FFVIII – Part 12: Dollet Departure

Summary: Two old friends return. The Communications Tower reactivates. The squad flees from Dollet, pursued by a mechanical monster. Quistis is awesome, Seifer’s a jerk, news at 11.

Dollet – Communication Tower

-Got some Blind from a draw point.

-Up the elevator.

-HI GUYS!!!

Nice to see you two again.

-There’s a “monster-shaped shadow” atop the tower. Chances of Wedge and Biggs dying to it? High.

-The party reaches the top of the tower, and then we get monster PoV, or at least some kind of ominous, swooping from the sky PoV.

-and oh man that music

-Wedge got the tower working again. Everything springs to life.

-hahahahaha!!! Biggs notices the squad there.

BIGGS: “Wedge, take care of these twerps! …W-Wedge?” HE ABANDONED YOU. Worst friend ever

Biggs literally tries to tip-toe away, even though everyone is looking right at him.

-Boss fight time. Against Biggs. XD

-He doesn’t hit that hard, but he hits FAST.

-And Wedge finally shows up.

Better late than never, right?

WEDGE: “Have you finished the repairs, sir? …uh, what’s the enemy doing here?”
BIGGS: “No pay for you this month!”

Bless this game.

-oh shit, a big green wave or wind gust from above blew them away.

Time for the real boss fight most likely.

-what the actual fuck is that

Elvoret.

-Half gargoyle, half wasp. The party is just as confused as I am.

-Drew “Siren” from it, but not sure how many copies. I assume this is the Charm spell. Also drew “Double.”

-One major, MAJOR improvement in FFVIII from every other game in the series is the usefulness of summons. Every prior summon or esper in the series was tremendously mana-draining as far as I remember, so it was a special thing, something you do only for major boss fights. Sure, there were certain summoner classes and jobs, like Rydia or the FFIII summoner, but those felt like glorified black mages because you hardly ever used the summons if you cared about preserving mana.

Not so here! Selphie can actually FEEL like a summoner, and GFs are a core part of the regular gameplay. Love it.

-Victory!

-Some weird loot. “G-Returner,” which is like a GF Phoenix Down, and “Weapons Mon Mar.” A Weapons research magazine. Um. Ok.

-OH SHIT, the “Siren” I drew wasn’t a charm spell. It was a GF!

-Selphie finally delivers her message to Seifer. Withdraw to the shore by 19:00. Seifer runs off on his own. Some captain.

-…really, game? Another timer? It’s 30 minutes, but just… why.

-Biggs is non-responsive. I’ll bet if I hang around up here he might eventually get up, but I don’t remember how long this path to the shore will take and I don’t want to screw around with it.

-oh lol, that was quick. As soon as the squad takes the elevator, Biggs crawls over to a data pad or controller or something, programs a thing (probably a mechanical thing judging by the stomping clanky noises) to attack us, and then he collapses.

-Yup! It ambushes us outside the Comm Tower, jumping down the entire way.

X-ATM092.

-Drew a Protect from it which is nice. The first Draw attempt failed, which I didn’t know was a thing that could happen.

-The game tells me to escape, so I do. The X-ATM092 stays collapsed at the door.

Escape from Dollet

-LOL NM, BY “COLLAPSED” I APPARENTLY MEAN “TAKING A BRIEF NAP BEFORE CHARGING AT US AGAIN”

-btw have I praised the music yet? Because damn

-We beat it, but it keeps catching us and re-engaging.

-This thing is relentless. (Which the Scan confirms.)

Save yourself, puppy!

-The pursuit continues through the down, with the mech wreaking havoc on its path.

-The squad reaches the boat, but the mech is right behind.

-Super slow mo as Squall dives for the departing boat.

QUISTIS HHAHAHAHAHAHA

SHE GOES ALL RAMBO ON THE MECH FROM THE BOAT’S MACHINE GUN

BLOWS IT TO SMITHEREENS

QUISTISSSSSS

---

Balamb

-Fujin and Raijin meet the squad back at the docks. Seifer continues his streak of being the biggest asshole in the Final Fantasy series, one-upping his prior highs.

”How to Lose Friends and Repulse People,” by Seifer.

-The three Disciplinary Committee members leave.

-Quistis emerges from the boat. We’ll meet at the Garden by sundown.

-Fucking Seifer (for that is his full name to me at this point) drives off in the Turtle Van with Fujin and Raijin, leaving our party in the dust.

-Relaxing Balamb music.

-The squad rests up in the hotel.

Next time: back to the Garden.
