FFVI – Part 19: Ride the Tide (Sabin’s scenario)

Summary: Restocking in Mobliz, before we insert ourselves in the middle of the wounded solder’s personal life. We head south to the Mountain Cave, get Gau’s “shiny” (a diving helmet), and ride the ocean current to Nikeah. We sniff around a bit, then sail to South Figaro and then onto Narshe.

Mobliz

-Another letter arrived to the soldier. Lola can’t find her favorite record that reminds her of the soldier. We go back to the carrier pigeon house and spend another 500 gil to send said record.

-Ok, two things. First, how cool is it that FFVI has records? Second, this seems a little bit presumptuous. We should probably at least talk to the soldier before sending all this crap to his beloved. Sure, he’ll probably be happy, but still.

-I left town and came back to the soldier’s house, but no new letters.

-Hm. Tried going out and fighting a few times, but same deal. No letters.

-YES! Spent a night at the inn, and a new letter arrived. Makes sense as a means to force the passage of time. I get it now.

-The next letter is that Lola’s mom’s ill and needs money for medicine. Another 500 gil to the Random Soldier and Lola fund, and then another 100 for a night at the inn.

-Next day, a new letter. What? She says she hasn’t heard from the soldier in a while and is worrying? WE JUST MAILED YOU A LETTER YESTERDAY? Grr. Oh well, let’s send another.

-Hee! I’m so financially invested in this relationship.

-Another letter the next day. She wants a book the soldier recommended, and so we send it to her. We’re basically Amazon.com.

If you give a mouse a cookie…

-No letter the next day, but the soldier tells us he heard about the letters we sent. He thanks us with a relic, “Tintinnabulum.” Thanks dude! It restores HP with each step. Sounds… kind of underwhelming?

-Time to head south. Across the Veldt, to…

Mountain Cave

-Gau forgot where his shiny is. Hunting time.

-We went to a spot overlooking a cliff, and Gau acted as if he saw something down below. Sabin walked to the edge of the cliff to look. Gau slowly snuck up behind Sabin and yelled, scaring the crap out of him.

LOLOLOL

He made Sabin drop 500 gil, but I don’t even care. That was amazing. u gau

-Found the shiny. Oh, of course! It’s the diving helmet to help us through the Serpent Trench. Don’t they need 3 though? Whatever. Video game logic.

-Time to cliff dive into the current.

Gau is not excited by the prospect of diving.

---

Serpent Trench

-Nice camera view as we ride the current underwater. The music is beautiful, too! Underwater areas are always nice musically in FF. I still enjoy listening to the music of the Sunken Shrine from FFI.

-We get one directional choice on the way, left or right. As a lefty, I’ll invariably go left.

-Some fights along the way. Gau’s “Ghost” rage here works like a champ with Thundara against water creatures.

---

Nikeah

-Washed up on shores. That’s happened a few times so far.

-A ferry in town goes to South Figaro.

-Fairy Rings seem useful, anti-poison and anti-Darkness. I buy three.

-We meet Gau’s midwife. It was apparently a problematic birth that killed the mother, and drove the father to throw Gau to the wolves. Poor Gau

-A woman asks Cyan to dance. He… doesn’t react well.

DANCER: “Hey, do you like these? I call this one Humpty, and this one Dumpty.” WTF KIND OF PICK-UP LINE IS THAT

-Cyan’s freaked out, and Sabin enjoys mocking him a bit, and I get that it’s supposed to be all humorous to see the stuffy Cyan confronted with her, but I’m mixed. Cyan’s wife and son just died. Like, days ago. I don’t blame her at all, since she obviously just finds him attractive, but I feel bad watching Sabin joke about it given the context.

-Ships used to sail south to Tzen, Albrook, and Maranda, but the Empire took that continent over. Is that its home base? I wonder. Is one of those three even the capital city for the Empire?

-A rockslide blocks the way north. I briefly explored the overworld near Nikeah, but all the paths were blocks in some way.

-Time to sail to South Figaro. I’ll be annoyed if I have to yet again walk through the South Figaro Cave to Narshe.

-Praise the Creator! We do not have to go through that cave again. The scenario ends, as we walk to Narshe off-screen.

Next time: many meetings in Narshe.
