FFVI – Part 24: My Little Esper: Friendship is Magicite

Summary: Lots of exposition this session from Ramuh. We learn the tragic history of espers, and the horrifying truth behind where magitek comes from. A new game mechanic gets introduced: magicite.

Atop Zozo

-I like Terra’s new portrait.

A bit mischevious.

-Ramuh is watching over her?? Like, the thunder god/eidolon? That’s unexpected. He’s much more composed than he was in FFV.

-Terra’s hopping around, all feral, then collapses in bed again.

-Ramuh is an esper. Huh. I guess those are FFVI’s eidolons.

-Ramuh says espers are from another world, but some who look like regular humans can dwell here because… well, because they can pass for regular humans. They don’t get harassed.

-Humans and espers used to live together until the War of the Magi. That war was due to humans draining the espers, extracting their magic. The espers fought back, and to avoid being targeted they created their own world.

-20 years ago, Gestahl discovered the entrance to the esper world, and has been draining them since. Dammit, Gestahl.

-A gate was built then to shut off the humans.

The gate looks AWESOME.

-The captured espers are in the Empire’s Magitek Research Facility. Being drained. Again: dammit, Gestahl.

-The music playing over ExpositionFest ’94 is haunting.

-Huh. Terra’s not quite an esper apparently. Half esper?

-Ramuh says his trapped bretheren can help here. I smell rescue mission.

-You can’t drain an esper’s power by force. Then how are they making magitek armor?

-“Only when we become magicite can our powers be transferred in full.” Magicite is their remains. Basically, you have to kill an esper to drain it.

This really puts all the random magitek armor we’ve seen in perspective. Like, does that mean that when Wedge and Biggs and Terra were riding magitek at the start of the game, they were riding machines powered by the dead espers? Not necessarily a 1:1 ratio – for all I know, one dead esper’s magicite can power 20 magitek suits, but still. Dead esper.

-RAMUH’S KILLING HIMSELF TO GIVE US HIS MAGICITE? WHY?

-So this is like turning us all into summoners. Everyone can use magicite. For… things?

-RIP, Ramuh. See you in FFVII maybe. At least he gave me the magicite from three of his buddies who were killed by the Empire: “Cait Sith,” “Kirin,” “Siren.”

-Sabin and Cyan are here now.

-Oh, man… Celes always suspected, heard rumors, but now knows that she got her infused power from murdered (yes, murdered) espers. That’s some gruesome shit.

Celes.

Entrance to Zozo

-Ok. Party adjustment time, as four of us will go to infiltrate the Empire’s Magitek Research Facility by way of Jidoor to break out the trapped espers. I love Gau, and Edgar’s fun, but I’ll change it up and substitute in Sabin and Cyan. Locke and Celes are locked into the party.

-A ghost is here to teach us about magicite.

-Quick side note: I LOVE that FFVI keeps peppering in these tutorials. Not too many, and exactly as needed.

-So it seems like each party member can equip one esper’s magicite at a time. They can summon the esper once per fight for a spell. Also, as they gain experience, the espers teach the character magic.

-This feels reminiscent of the job system in FFV. Interesting blend of the linearity of FFIV and the freedom of FFV.

-LOLOL

Of COURSE “Cat Rain” would confuse. What else would a rain of cats cause

Best spell ever y/y?

Next time: will try finishing the clock puzzle and then sailing south from Jidoor.
