FFVI – Part 4: Sand in My Shoes

Summary: Terra wanders the castle. Kefka visits Figaro. He gets sand on his shoes. (Trust me, that part is worthy of being in the summary.)  He wants Terra, and Edgar cagily says no.

Figaro Castle

-I really like the worldbuilding, where “magic” isn’t well-known, and what is known about it is mostly myth and hearsay. I love this in ASoIaF as well, how this is a fantasy world where magic isn’t as common as breathing.

-Not sure who will use the “tools” this vendor sells, but they all look cool so I bought one of each.

-Women around the castle confirm that Edgar is something of a player.

More than a little creepy when you put it like that.

---

Edgar’s Flashback

-We see Edgar and his mulleted brother discuss their ill father.

-The bro gets his own black intro screen.

Sabin.

-I was wrong – Sabin’s portrait has a ponytail, not a mullet.

-He “traded the throne for his freedom,” which I imagine means he abdicated to avoid the responsibility or something.

---

Figaro Castle

-The Gestahlian Empire is on the march, overthrowing kingdoms left and right, which means it hasn’t yet achieved world domination. Magitek seems new. I wonder if it was developed directly from studying Terra, or if she was just a final piece.

-Figaro sends advanced weaponry to South Figaro.

-Scholars are studying magic, but they don’t see what it looks like, so it’s mostly academic.

-The Chancellor says that Sabin actually left out of disgust with succession rather than for fear of ruling. It was settled by a cointoss. Like, literally?

-An ambassador from the empire is on the way.

Desert

-It’s Kefka! Hi!

-LOL WTF IS HIS PORTRAIT

-HIS MUSIC!!! It’s… it’s really hard to describe. It’s pretty goofy, but with some imperial/dramatic elements too. I love love love it. Such a unique sound.

-He’s like a petulant child, whining about the chore he was sent to do.

But mooooooom! I took out the trash last week!

-He got sand on his shoes, drew his soldiers’ attention to it, and they jumped to polish the boots ASAP.

Sir, yes sir!

LOLOLOL

-Oh God. I was laughing, and then Kefka joined me. He even has this kind of funny and kind of creepy barking-laughter sound effect.

-Not sure what to make of him so far. He seems a lot like Gilgamesh in terms of being the kind of silly/light lieutenant, complete with what seems like facepaint. Kefka to Emperor Gestahl as Gilgamesh was to Exdeath.

But Gilgamesh would NEVER have forced a mindslave to burn his own soldiers while laughing. Kefka seems… I dunno, just plain nastier than Gilgamesh for someone in the “comic relief henchman” role filled by the likes of Bebop and Rocksteady, Gilgamesh, etc. It’s a cool mix, and I can already start to see why people like him.

Figaro Castle

-Now controlling Edgar. His job is “Machinist,” so he must be the one who uses tools.

-Edgar definitely is suspicious of the empire.

-He called Kefka the empire’s “court mage.” Given this world, I don’t know if that is literal, that Kefka’s a black mage, or more figurative, like he’s just a high adviser to Gestahl.

-Kefka’s here for Terra. Edgar’s cagey about this, and Kefka responds with threats. He leaves.

-Back to Terra.

-Locke says that Edgar pretends to support the empire, but works with the Returns, with Locke as his go-between. Makes sense.

-One of the few things Terra knows is that she was an imperial soldier. She knows in her mind that the empire probably sucks, and that she was under control, but it’s still one of the few parts of her identity she’s certain about.

I like Locke.

-TERRA: “But how will I know which choice is right?” Again: poor Terra. :( Mindscrews are the worst.

Next time: Edgar deals with the Empire’s demands.
