FFVI – Part 44: Burning Down the House

Summary: Our party, joined now by Strago, heads into the burning house to save Relm. Things get hairy, but Shadow and Interceptor save the day. Strago fills in the backstory of Thamasa. We head west with Strago to find the espers. Shadow leaves because he’s Shadow.

Burning House in Thamasa

-Strago can cast “Lore.” So far, I have Revenge Blast and Aqua Breath. Blue magic? If so, how different from Gau?

-Lore spells cost mana, unlike Gau.

-LOVE the fiery setting.

-One of the doors in here only spams fire monsters.

”Three hundred sixty-five degrees.”

Can’t get through.

-Boss time! Flame Eater.

”All wet. Hey, you might need a raincoat.”

-Summons a few Bombs, but easy fight. Blizzara, Aqua Breath, and melee with Ice Rod annihilate it.

-Where’s Relm?

-A barking sound alerts us. Interceptor found her.

-Everything’s collapsing. We get knocked out by falling rafters, all except for Interceptor.

-Then Shadow drops in. Nice of you to join us. He evacuates us to safety somehow. I’m sure that if Interceptor hadn’t come to help Relm, he would’ve left us here.

Strago’s House

-Everyone’s ok.

-Strago fesses up that Thamasa is “the village of the magi.” Ok, but how?

-They’re the descendents of those who drained the espers in the War of the Magi.

-Holy shit. This is really cool backstory.

-After the war, non-magi hunted down magi, forcing them into hiding. Sometimes there were show trials, sometimes straight up murders.

”Hold tight. We’re in for nasty weather.”

It sucks for the magi, but if the magi (by definition) drained the espers, it’s hard for me to see any good guys in this.

Which is fascinating. I’d love for a “Magi Age: Inquisition” prequel add-on to FFVI that takes place at that time.

-Strago will lead us to the espers. Relm wants to come too, but Strago says no.

-Hee! Relm says “fuddy-duddy” in in frustration. What a great expression.

-Strago thinks the espers are in the mountains to the west which, which “teem with magic.” Those mountains are sacred to the espers.

-DAMMIT SHADOW. He walked out of the house without saying anything. If he’s about to leave, I’ll be pissed.

Thamasa

-Yeah. Shadow (a.k.a. “That Asshole Shadow”) is leaving us to search for espers in his “own way.” Wtf dude.

”Here’s your ticket. Pack your bags. Time for jumping overboard.”

-Shadow = uncaring ass. Got it. He makes sure that Strago knows he only went out of his way to save everyone because his dog was in trouble. Otherwise, Locke, Terra, Strago, and Relm could have just as easily burned for all he cared.

-Aw! Interceptor wants to stay and play with Relm. Even Shadow can’t prevent the powerful pull of puppy play.

”Hold tight. Wait til the party’s over.”

-Rods are again single use in FFVI. I don’t like that. Much preferred the FFIV version to FFV, where the rod use was repeatable.

-Strago is in fact a blue mage. More traditional than Gau in terms of learning monster magic, he needs to see spells cast to learn them. Does that mean he needs them to be cast on him?

-I really, really hope we’ll meet someone with the ability to force monster spells the way the FFV beastmaster did.

-Interesting! Apparently Relm isn’t Strago’s biological granddaughter. Based on my FF experience, the chance of this being “only a rumor” is about 0.037%.

I’ll bet we’ll meet her father eventually. OR that it was someone we’ve already seen even! Maybe Gau’s dad? Brother Gau and sister Relm? Dunno, and I’ve already been proved wrong on one sibling guess with Terra and Celes.

Gau’s dad already won one “John Winchester Memorial Worst Dad of the Year” award, so it’s possible he’d deserve a second. We’ll see. Ebert’s Law of Conservation of Characters suggests we’ve met someone biologically related to Relm already, whether mom, dad, or sibling.

”Strange but not a stranger.”

-Ok. Let’s head west.

Next time: seeking espers in the mountains west of Thamasa. We should watch out. We might get what we’re after.
