FFVI – Part 45: The Pint-Sized Virtuoso

Summary: In the Esper Cave, we find a shrine to the Warring Triad. Ultros jumps us, and Relm saves the day.

Esper Cave

-Some of the monsters here are really resistant to magic. To my surprise, the melee damage of hitting with an elemental weapon like Flame Rod or Icebrand doesn’t pierce that resistance (though when the weapons proc a spell, that does).

-Fun cave music. Bouncy!

-LOL – I see Relm sneaking up behind us and running away.

-We find the statues of the “Warring Triad.” That’s the thing that Kefka wanted to wake up or something. Strago is freaked out.

-Uh oh. The Warring Triad are the gods who made magic and espers. Kefka was bad news, but I’ll give him this: he dreamed big.

-This shrine must be why the espers find the mountain sacred. I wonder where the espers themselves are though. Like, why aren’t they at the shrine right now?

-Eventually, the gods “tired of their fighting” (whose? Their own, or the espers with humans? I have to imagine that they fought amongst themselves, since they are called the Warring Triad, but I feel like I missed something). They turned themselves to stone.

-OH SHIT! What if the espers want revenge on the Empire and decide to wake up the Warring Triad? Will those gods become the “Big Bad”? Final Fantasy has already given us a god as a final boss once or twice, with the Creator in FFIV: TAY, the emperors of heaven and hell in FFII, and sort of with the Cloud of Darkness in FFIII.

-The gods in their stone forms are somewhere in the esper world.

-ULTROS???

-I don’t know what would surprise me more – Ultros or the Spanish Inquisition. Neither of them is ever expected.

-Ultros wants to use the statues’ power.

-…to get respect from Siegfried? That goofball swordsman from the Phantom Train? Of COURSE they’d be rivals. Of course. I need to know more about this relationship RITE NAOW!!1!

-Hee! Locke falled Ultros “squidbrain.” More Bartz/Gilgamesh vibes from Locke/Ultros.

-Boss time.

-Hm. Regular fight music, not boss music.

-Oh God. Ultros started moving closer to us in combat. I’m getting flashbacks to that stupid jerkface Tonberry from FFV. Scariest monster ever. Like the Demon Wall from FFIV’s nastier brother.

-Relm jumps in to save the day! Her wonderfully relaxing music comes on, bagpipes and all.

-LOLOLOL SHE STARTS TALKING TO ULTROS LIKE A LOST PUPPY OR SOMETHING

Hey, little guy! Who’s the cutest li’l octopus?

-Locke: “A ping-sized virtuoso and an egotistical octopus. Do I even want to know what’s next?”

-SHE CALLED HIM ULTY

-She wants to paint his portrait, but he’s hesitant. This is so weird.

She pretends to be really hurt, giving us a kind of disconcerting joke about jumping off a ledge because she’s so upset.

-OH GOD

-“UNCLE ULTY” im dying

-He gives in and lets her draw his portrait. We go back to combat with Relm on our site, and she casts her “Sketch” ability. It’s SUPER cool!

Sketching Ultros.

She draws a small version of Ultros which causes hits Ultros with his own ability, Tentacle.

So Relm is like part blue mage, but also reminds me a lot of the FFV “Mimic” job. This is like the third variation on that type of copy-magic this game, with Gau, Relm, and Strago. Bravo, FF. Really new and interesting character classes/jobs here that all have distinct flavors.

-Back to the fight. The tentacle hit for low-moderate damage, but caused Ultros to flee because he didn’t like how he looked in his portrait. XD XD

-Relm joined the party!

Next time: to the top of the mountain.
