FFVI – Part 51: Things Fall Apart

Summary: Kefka defeats Gestahl, unbalances the Warring Triad, and shatters the planet. Our party escapes, but the Blackjack cracks aparts and the party members are presumably scattered.

The Floating Continent

-We arrive at Gestahl, Kefka, and the Triad

-CELES!! YES!!

-The Triad’s power starts getting somehow channeled to Gestahl, who zaps our party, paralyzing us.

-GROSS GROSS GROSS

Ok. Gestahl still likes Celes, and tries giving her the least enticing “join the dark side” speech ever made. She respects her so much that he wants her to mate with Kefka to populate his empire.

-Kefka hands her a sword and asks her to kill the party to prove her loyalty.

-The last temptation of Celes. Turns out to be not really a significant temptation. Even aside from the Kefka thing, I don’t think she really feels much loyalty to the person she now knows Gestahl to be.

-W W W T T T F F F

-SHE TURNS AROUND, RUNS AT KEFKA, AND DRIVES HER SWORD INTO HIM

-Does this mean I was right earlier? That it’ll be Gestahl who’ll go super saiyan?

-Kefka’s bleeding out. “DIE DIE DIE” YOU SADISTIC FUCK

-…Gah. He’s not dead yet, and now he’s appealing to the Triad.

-HE JUMPS INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE TRIAD’S POWER TRIANGLE.

-Gestahl tries to reason with Kefka about the destruction Kefka could cause by directly disrupting the Triad.

GESTAHL: “There’s no value in that.”

This conversation answers my confusion last session, about why they would want to mess with forces that could destroy the empire they want to rule. My thinking mirrored Gestahl, but not Kefka. Gestahl wants to just channel some of the Triad’s power to rule.

Kefka may not actually care about ruling. And why would he? He may actually want to destroy the world, just because. I don’t know what Kefka really wants, but it may well just be to inflict as much destruction as possible.

I would love to learn how Kefka came to Gestahl’s right-hand man. Perhaps if we get that flashback at some point to pre-magitek infusion Kefka, we’ll see.

-Kefka literally laughs off Gestahl’s arguments, and then Gestahl just gives up.

Gestahl moves in for the kill.

He stops trying to reach Kefka, and moves to kill him with magic.

-WHICH FAILS. Firaga, flare, nothing works. Why?

-Ah. Kefka’s still in the Triad’s triangle, which is negating Gestahl’s magic.

-Kefka then is somehow able to direct the Triad to kill Gestahl. He has them zap at him, and keeps trying to get them to aim their strikes better and better: “Run! Run! Or you’ll be well done!” The Dr. Seuss of the Gestahlian Empire.

-Direct hit. He did it.

-KEFKA THREW GESTAHL’S DYING BODY OFF THE CONTINENT

-HE UNBALANCED THE TRIAD, MOVING THEIR STATUES OUT OF ALIGNMENT, KNOCKING CELES NEARLY OFF

Unchaining the magic.

-SHADOW JUMPS FROM OUT OF NOWHERE TO SAVE CELES

-He tries pushing the Triad back into alignment, but it’s too late to stop. He’s now just trying to hold down Kefka, pinning him beneath one of the Triad members, to give us time to escape.

Escape

-The world below is dark. Probably a bad sign.

-FRIGGING TIMER. I have six minutes to get off the island.

-The joker-type monsters, Kefka’s cronies I’m guessing, are the only random encounters now. They’re particularly annoying because they freeze me, and time is of the essence.

-I fight a mini-boss who casts “Doom” on me, but it’s a pretty easy fight.

I heard you like timers, so we put timers in your timers so you can panic while you panic.

-Reached the edge of the continent, but it gives me the option to stay. I assume this means there IS some way to access the treasure, so I go back to explore with two minutes to go.

GIMME.

-Nothing. Grr. Spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find an invisible bridge or secret panel or something, before remembering OH YEAH TIMER

-DAMMIT PULLED INTO COMBAT WITH 13 SECONDS TO GO BEFORE GETTING BACK TO THE SHIP

-And… I live somehow?

-SHADOW!!

I get pulled out of combat as Shadow bounds in and we jump off onto the Blackjack together. I assumed he was just gonna die on the island. Cool.

The Breaking of the World

-The magic from the Triad starts to run wild, torching and rending the land below.

-They’re actually doing this. They’re actually doing this. The game is going there, and they’re actually doing this.

-We see our party on the Blackjack as it cracks in half.

-We zoom out to a view from SPACE, AND SEE THE PLANET ITSELF CRACK AND BURN

-We get a title screen: “On that day, the world was changed forever.”

-Kefka literally wrecked the world. He actually won.

-KEFKA WON

-I don’t know whether Kefka could have survived this (he has the devil’s own luck it seems, so definitely possible), or if he was overwhelmed by the Triad’s power since he was basically at ground zero, but regardless, he won. He destroyed the world.

Next time: ???????????????

”Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned…”
