FFVII Crisis Core – Part 48: Open Cages

Summary: Zack putters around the Shinra Building, learning more about the rampant monster attacks at mako attacks the world round. Preparation for an upcoming mission with Sephiroth.

Shinra Building

-Sephiroth briefs Zack. Monsters spawned near a regional mako reactor. The workers are missing. I am Zack’s complete lack of surprise.

-More interesting is that two operatives now missing were the ones tracking Lazard.

-Reports of a “strange, podlike device in the area.” Sounds like clone work.

-I don’t know how I never noticed this before, but Sephiroth’s not wearing a shirt.

Just, like, a half open trench coat with a harness over a bare chest.

-Sephiroth’s and Zack’s mission is to investigate the reactor. Nothing more.

Poor Zack’s hopes.

-Holy shit. Sephiroth just came out and said, “Depending on what happens, I may abandon Shinra.” Depending on what? If it seems like Shinra betrayed SOLDIER and they get proof? I feel a bit lost.

Shinra Building – SOLDIER Floor

-No soldiers are showing up. Except Kunsel, who pops by to say he has to inspect the Fort Condor mako reactor and can’t go with Zack.

-Kunsel seeks how sad Zack is to be leaving his giiiiiirlfrieeeeend. Encourages Zack to go say goodbye before leaving on the mission. This is one of those things that I’ll do because the game says to do, but it seems like a TERRIBLE idea to delay the mission in order to take a train to Sector 5 and spend time with his girlfriend. This mission sounded urgent!

-Just noticed. Is the music much different than usual? It sounds like the Shinra Building music from FFVII, and I thought the normal Shinra Building music in Crisis Core was different. Could just be mis-remembering.

-A researcher relates the rumor that what once were thought to be Ancients were not. (Wait – plural?)

-They offer to test me in the Training Room (what I like to think of as the Danger Room), but it’s just the squat game still.

-It seems like every SOLDIER on the floor has been assigned to some remote mako reactor to clean up monsters. Junon, Corel, Gongaga… all over. A surge of monsters at mako reactors.

-A scientist mentions the existence of certain special materia.

…Yeah, I may have heard something about that.

-It comforts me to see the formerly bumbling Third Class still working on squats. Embracing his dreams.

Shinra Building

-In the Exhibit Room, a really weird interaction. A scientist scoffs at Zack and SOLDIER.

Eventually asks: “Why are you here?” Implied that he’s not asking “here in the Exhibition Room,” but rather “here in Shinra.” Who the fuck are you dude?

-The conversation is interrupted by a call from Kunsel, saying that the monsters that SOLDIER’s going around and fighting in Midgar and Kalm specifically were once owned by the science department.

-This is pretty fucked up right here.

-The motorcycle in the Exhibition Room is incredibly difficult to ride.

Only the spikiest-haired of jerks can tame it!

-One of the City Planning folk told me that the mission Zack did for them went well, and they’ll mail more missions. Cool.

-Dang. It’s like everyone in Shinra knows about Zack and Aerith.

-New mission!

Mission: Monster Research Project > Monsters in Midgar > Truth in the Wasteland (6/6)

-This is the final mission in a campaign that’s been going on a little while now. Killing monsters all around the area, wondering where they come from. Now I know.

-The ease of combat in this final campaign mission makes me think I could’ve accessed this way earlier in the game. Every monster’s a one-shot.

-Sadly, no final campaign wrap-up mailing, but perhaps I have to talk to someone for that.

-Hey, neat!

After I finished the mission and talked to the potion woman in the Shinra Building, her potion granted me “Raise.” I thought it only healed.

Next time: Back to the Church to see Aerith before heading off on the next mission with Sephiroth.
