FFIV After Years – Part 10: Izayoi’s Mission (Edge’s Tale)

In this session, I played out Izayoi’s mission. Her spying started out in Troia, disguised as an Epopt trainee. Epopts seem to be the high council of Troia, and there’s an opening on the council so they’re pushing the Epopt trainees abnormally hard. Izayoi moves on to check out a large tower constructed just for training. She climbs the tower, and is eaten by a raven at the end. This actually happens.

Troia

-Hm. This starts in Troia?

-Not sure if I mentioned this, but the prior two trainees were male. Izayoi is female, as is the other trainee.

-And Izayoi is disguised as a trainee to be an Epopt, part of the all-female council.

-Rumor is that someone named Leonora needed to master black magic, which shocks the other Epopt trainees. I guess the peaceful Troians aren’t really down with black magic usually.

-OH! Maybe she’s the girl who was with Palom on the black chocobo back in Rydia’s Tale!

-There’s a big tower south of Troia, across two rivers

-Random old woman in the pub: “Hoh hoh hoh! Not to brag or anything, but I’m the kingpin around these parts!” Final Fantasy crossover with either “Daredevil” or a prison show like “Orange is the New Black” or “Oz?” Sure, why not?

-One of the other ladies in the pub is hitting on Izayoi: “Oooh! Not bad! You taken?” I both wonder and doubt whether queer characters will pop up in the main cast of Final Fantasy as the series goes on.

-A big named Mysidian mage is in town apparently. Probably Palom.

-A pig walking around town said he got that way by eating too much. I have no idea of he’s kidding, or if that actually happened.

-HI PALOM!! He should be in his early 20s, and though his portrait makes him look not a day over 15.

-The Epopt training is intense. One of the things they have us do is stand in icy water as long as possible.

-Hm. The number of black chocobos is down. Is that a sign of something, or just random wildlife change?

-Chocobos needed to reach the Tower of Trials. I can’t seem to find anything else in town to do, so off to the northern chocobo forest to grab one and head to the Tower I suppose.

Tower of Trials

-I guess they couldn’t call it “Citadel of Ordeals” because that was the rat tail cave from FFI, but maybe they’re cousins.

-…The door is locked. Do I have other stuff to do first?

-APPARENTLY NOT BECAUSE IZAYOI IS A NINJA AND SHE JUMPS WHERE SHE PLEASES. SCALE THOSE WALLS, YOU BADASS EBLANIAN

-Iza’s attacks SUCK, but the mobs in this place suck too, so no biggie. This is even with the lunar phase boosting their attacks.

-I do like her “Illusions” though. It’s basically a mana-free charm spell, with a pretty good success rate.

-LOLOLOL – when Illusions fails, the message is “The monster is uninterested.” Like the larva or floating eyeball is giving an “it’s not you, it’s me” or “Sorry, you’re nice enough, but I’m only attracted to other larva.”

-The boss at the top of the tower, a big raven-type called “Zu,” hits hard as fuck. Double hits for about 100 each, and I only have around 350 health.

-Oh. This seems to be one of those where I’m supposed to lose.

-Seriously.

-Urk. She dies. Does this count as fridging? Probably not, but maybe it depends on how the story presents it.

-This makes me wonder… was the fight actually winnable? Like, would it have opened up another scenario where she stays in the game if she had won?

-Same question applies to the prior mission with Zangetsu. If he had chosen to jump in to join the Fabulian monks against Evil Moon Girl, would he have died there?

Next time: the final student’s mission.
