FFIV After Years – Part 3: Night Vale Crossover

Ceodore nobly starts out to follow Biggs’ dying order, to hie himself to Baron… and promptly gets his ass whooped. He’s saved by a mysterious hooded figure.

Not THAT hooded figure, thanks be to the Glow Cloud… (pic found on fuckyeahwelcometonightvale.tumblr.com)

The Hooded Figure (“HF”) wants to help Ceodore out, and takes him to Mysidia en route to Baron. Porom and the Elder direct us through the Devil’s Road, which we take to Baron. The castle has been populated by Stepford Guards, so we have to sneak in through the Waterway. Once inside, we’re bumfuzzled, and HF and Ceodore make for Mist.

----

Airship

-It’s kind of funny to me that Ceodore starts out in a position I’ve been in so often before – like when Cecil was abandoned after the Leviathan attack, or after Mist collapsed – except instead of nobly trekking to the nearest town on his own, he just his ass STOMPED by the first monster he comes across. LOLOL

-Not sure who this HF is. Says he has urgent business in Baron. My initial thoughts are Edward or Kain (got that long, flowing blond hair), but he seems way too young.

----

Mysidia

-Mention of a Dragoon on Mount Ordeals. Has Kain been hanging out there for like the last 17 years?

-Palom is the greatest black mage in Mysidia! Yay! I wonder if he’s still basically a dick. And it sounds like he is.

-OMG HI POROM YOU ARE A REDHEAD AND LIKE 18 YRS OLD HI

-The white mage and black mage Porom summons each have portraits, albeit generic ones. Could they be more than redshirts?

-A black mage in the Tower of Prayers says this moon seems different than before. I wonder if that means it’s a different moon – like, a rival race to the Lunarians – or maybe just the same moon that’s been fundamentally corrupted or changed in some way.

---

Devil’s Road

-Yay! More puzzles!

-I’m not being sarcastic. I really do like this kind of puzzles, though when the focus is on the puzzle, I wish they would eliminate random encounters. They just serve to disrupt the pace and mood.

-Back in the base game, we just got zapped with a sapping green light from Mysidia to Baron. I wonder if this combat and puzzle thing was going on the whole time.

---

Baron Town

-I didn’t even think of this, but someone in town said that the Mist Cave gets particularly fierce monsters when there’s a full moon. Another aspect of the lunar cycle mechanic! Phase-only areas/monsters/etc.

-The city guards seem pale and robotic, like versions of the fake!Rydia from Interlude.

-Is the HF Kain’s son? Or maybe Kain himself? (…again, no probably to this latter option. He’s too young, and doesn’t jump or use a lance.) But we never heard anything about Kain having a child. Unless the child is younger than Ceodore, and born after the events of Interlude.

-Maybe HF is someone from Interlude. He seems to remember those events.

---

Waterway

Not much to say here. It’s a cave.

---

Castle Baron

-The party broke up. In the main game, we were ALWAYS at least Cecil. Now we’re the Hooded Figure, just named “???”. And this is a good mystery! I legitimately don’t know who HF is.

-I wonder if we’ll see the generic black and white mage again.

-More super creepy Stepford Soldiers: “Your orders… my liege…”

-I love the lack of music in this place. Makes the scene extra forboding.

-Fake!Cecil on the throne!

-Now I’m surer that HF is Kain. “Cecil” didn’t recognize HF, acted rude, and HF knew immediately it wasn’t Cecil probably because he and Cecil were so close.

-OR MAYBE HE COUL D BE SURE FOR OTHER REASONS I DON’T KNOW

-Hahaha!! Now HF (little Kain? Kain himself? Someone else entirely?) and little Cecil (Ceodore) are going to Mist together. This is very retro.

Wow, that looks FANTASTIC!

It also seems to share a trait with "The Corpse Bride," where the land of the dead looks way more fun than the land of the living.
