FFVII – Part 66: Diamonds and Rust

Summary: Diamond Weapon attacks. We stall it, and Shinra delivers a killing blow to both the Weapon and Sephiroth’s bubble. Cait Sith is revealed. Hojo works to destroy Sephiroth at the cost of Midgar, and at the behest of a party suspected but unknown. We’re off to save the city.

Diamond Weapon

-She. Looks. AWESOME.

-Opening salvo is to break out Bahamut, Neo-Bahamut, and Leviathan. Giant killer robot wants to attack the city? I’ve seen enough Japanese monster movies to know that he can’t do it unopposed by other giant monsters who shelter the city.

-She then starts a Countdown. Probably not to hugs and puppies.

-OW! The countdown finished, and her Diamond Flash brought all of us to minimum health and muted us. Then killed Tifa.

-Our physical attacks no longer hurt her. That plus the muting Diamond Flash must indicate a phase change, where only magic can work.

-VICTORY!!!!! And a METRIC TON of experience and gil.

(Materia question: What does “Lightning was born!” mean? Something to do with mastering a materia?)

-Hm. Doesn’t look like we actually killed her. Instead, she just kind of turned away. Looking at something.

-Cloud says she “senses murder.” I think this means that she actually is a hero-type, protector of the planet, and seeks to eliminate the bad. After all, Bugenhagen said the Planet would judge for itself. Maybe Diamond Weapon and the others are angels of vengeance.

Problem is, I don’t know if it can separate the good from the bad if it’s attacking a city as large as Midgar.

-I think that’s where it’s turning. It’s moving towards MIdgar.

Shinra Building

-They’re firing up the Sister Ray.

-It’s drawing on all the cities reactors – which probably will only make the Diamond Weapon angrier, since it’s drawing on the planet’s lifeblood!

-It fires a GINORMOUS burst of energy, shattering glass in the city.

-But Diamond Weapon isn’t taking this lying down.

-The Sister Ray’s blast absolutely rips through Diamond Weapon, but not before she got off a salvo of blasts at the city.

Returning fire. What a beautiful giant robot monster thing. Love the Weapons.

-The energy destroyed Weapon, and also obliterates the energy bubble around Sephiroth.

-Rufus’s shots slam into the city, including Rufus’s tower. Hard to tell if he’s dead. Not sure how he could’ve survived that blast, but the rule I learned in this series is that until I see their sprite blink out of existence, or really have their death confirmed, assume the character is still alive.

Rufus’s eyes seeing his oncoming death. OR IS IT? (Probably.)

-The energy bubble is down. Next stop: Sephiroth.

BARRET: “When AVALANCHE was just startin’ out, we used to put up flyers everywhere. And now we’re up against Sephiroth. How about that? Feels like a long time ago.”

The Highwind

-We draw near to the crater in the north.

-Cait Sith checks in with Gya-ha-ha and Kya-ha-ha. They report that they lost contact with Rufus.

(I’m still not sure what Cait Sith’s deal is. It seems like he’s gone rogue, but he also seems loyal to the company because he thinks doing so will help Midgar somehow.)

-I was wrong – it’s not contact with Rufus that they care about. It’s contact with the Sister Ray. The Ray is still sucking up more and more power, seems in danger of overloading, and they can’t shut it down.

This makes me think that our next step will not be Sephiroth, but rather saving the good people of Midgar from Shinra’s recklessness.

-Someone sabotaged the controls, so Shinra’s heads can’t access it.

---

Mainframe

-HOJO! He’s trying to load the Sister Ray for another shot. Even knowing that it may destroy the city.

-This is really interesting. He’s not doing this for eeeeevil. He’s doing this for good, to fight Sephiroth. Well played, FFVII.

-Wait.

-Am I wrong? He seems to be talking to someone, about “Before you, Science is powerless. Show me Sephiroth.” I’m confused. Is he being influenced by Jenova somehow, for some reason?

The possibilities of what this might mean really are freaking me out.

The HIghwind

-They can’t just block the valves. That’ll eventually cause an explosion to dwarf the Reactor No. 1 explosion.

-Is Reeve Cait Sith? That’s odd. I didn’t remember him, but looking back at my notes see he was a reluctant Shinra employee, head of Urban Development. Ok.

Cait “Reeve” Sith.

[Later edit: I like this the more I think about it. Cait Sith isn’t some super spy. He’s a conscientious guy trying to do some good from within the system. This is really, really interesting to me.]

Next time: Back to Midgar.
