FFV – Part 10: Firepower

Summary: Some preparation, and then into the maze-like Fire-Powered Ship. We wind our way through to the boiler room, stop a creature of flame from exploding the engine, and save the crystal. For, like, two minutes. We meet the friendly werewolf, who knows Galuf somehow. A random possessed soldier then overloads the crystal, and the werewolf stalls it long enough for us to get out before it shatters. We have 10 minutes to get out of the castle before the whole thing blows.

Preparation

-I don’t feel quite ready, and so want

-I’ve been trying “Mystic Knight,” but feel kind of underwhelmed by it. The wind-up of using a turn to cast spellblade, which I think makes a weapon pierce certain magical weaknesses, doesn’t seem worth it really.

Let’s try this:

--Faris: Berserker with Two-Handed as an equipped passive from Knight.

--Bartz: I really get stuck on this. He’ll be some future job mainly, but for now, monk.

--Galuf: Harmful magic. Blue magic has underwhelmed me too. It seems like something fun on replay when I’m more comfortable looking up where to collect all the different blue magic, but I’m too nervous for spoilers to do that right now.

--Lenna: White magic mostly, but I like supplementing her with time magic.

Town of Karnak

-Library of the Ancients is in Jachol, south of Karnak.

-A monster called “Crew Dust” will cast Flash when alone. Good tip.

Fire-Powered Ship

-Intense music down below.

-this place must have been designed with time lord technology. Much, much bigger on the inside.

-This place is really confusing.

Like a steampunk-style maze.

-Found a World Map! Just kind of lying out in the open. Cool.

-Finally made my way to a save point. Boss time?

-No. More puzzles. Reminds me of those puzzles where you have to make the railway tracks hook up in the right way.

-Reached the boiler room…

-…Queen Karnak? Here? Trying to destroy the crystal.

-Oh. Another imposter. Setting fire to ALL THE THINGS.

There is no Queen Karnak. Only Zuul.

-SUCH A COOL BOSS. Lots of Fira and Blaze for aoe fire damage. Really glad I got Cura for Lenna before this.

She doesn’t have phases as far as I could understand, but she does have three forms that she kept rotating between.

All of them look badass.

-Flame Bow as a reward. Not sure which job I need for that, but probably Freelancer. Maybe ranger down the line.

-Not an imposter after all! That was the actual queen, just possessed by that Liquid Flame entity.

-She says that an evil spirit awoke. My money’s still on Dark Cloud! (Not really, but it does sound very similar.)

-AHA! It’s NOT just the machines destroying the crystals!

-Next room.

Fire Crystal Room

-A bit confused on the geography here. I guess the ship was connected to the castle directly.

-The werewolf busts into the room.

-Wolf: “Thank goodness it’s still intact!” So it is a good wolf. Cool.

-HE KNOWS GALUF! WHO ARE YOU GALUF

-A GUARD COMES IN THROUGH THE BACK OF THE CRYSTAL ROOM TO REACTIVATE THE MACHINE AND OVERLOAD IT

-We can’t stop it. The crystal’s going to shatter. Dangit.

-The guard is covered by the green circle/aura showing he’s possessed. “One more crystal and the seal is broken.” What seal? All joking aside, I’ll be greatly annoyed if it’s the Dark Cloud.

-The wolf is sacrificing himself to delay the machine from overloading the crystal until we get out. Thanks, wolf. Another one bites the dust for our sake.

-And we fall through the cracking floor.

-The flames all around us are dying.

-On re-entering the crystal room, we see that it’s shattered. Before we can go pick up all the juicy new jobs that are no doubt waiting for us, it seems that the castle itself relied on the crystal so much that the castle itself will explode.

-Tick tock.

Next time: RUUUUUUN!
